"We'll have to wait sev- eral months, possibly even years, to see the real effects of the administra- tion's efforts," Gordon said. V Several local Chinese student leaders, including Wuer Kaixi - who led the students in Tiananmen Square during the protests - also addressed -the crowd. Wuer went into hiding immediately after the military crackdown in Beijing and was hunted by the government until he escaped to Paris aboard a cargo plane in late June. Wuer lauded those slain during the military massacre and was moved to tears as he spoke of the violence ie had witnessed. He urged the crowd never to forget the June events. As the speeches and songs ended, the crowd assembled into a line sev- Oral miles long and marched 20 blocks down Connecticut Ave. to the Chinese Embassy, carrying signs aid chanting in both Chinese and hglish. (AP) - Students returning to some Mich- igan campuses this fall are learning lessons about the potentially fatal consequences of unprotected sex. Counselors from the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project are touring colleges and universities to present facts about the disease and help stu- dents develop new attitudes about having sex or not having it at all. "It's not who you are or what you are, but what you do," MAPP President Craig Covey said during a recent seminar at Siena Heights College here. "What matters is the kind of behavior you engage in." Covey and Kevin Hileman, two people involved in the program, dis- tributed condoms and AIDS informa- tion and spoke to about 100 students at the small Roman Catholic school. Catholic doctrine still teaches that premarital sex is a sin and that the natural rhythm method - be- tween married couples - is the only acceptable form of birth control. But MAPP was invited to Siena Heights so students could obtain in- formation needed to make responsi- ble choices, said Bernadette Pelland, assistant dean of students. "I'd be blind, deaf and dumb if I didn't do anything as an educator," she said. Siena Heights students are part of the widening audience found by MAPP, a nonprofit organization fi- nanced by donations and a grant from the Michigan Department of Public Health. Health statistics indicate acquired immune deficiency syndrome is leveling off among homosexual men, still its prime target, and in- creasing among intravenous drug users, women having sex with bi- sexual men and other heterosexuals. AIDS is caused by a virus that dame ages the body's immune system, leaving victims susceptible to infec- tions and cancer. "Right now, we're where we were at with gays four or five years ago - on the edge of an epidemic," Covey said. A survey by the Alan Gutmacher Institute, a New York-based research organization, showed condom use among 17- to 19-year-old men in- creased from 21 percent to 58 percent between 1979 and 1988. But an- other study conducted earlier this year at 19 college campuses showed nearly two of every 1,000 students tested positive for the AIDS virus, slightly higher than the rate among military recruits. Acceptance of condom use is only part of the battle against AIDS, Covey said. He and Hileman spent part of their time at Siena Heights asking students to demand knowl- edge about a potential bedmate's sexual past.
