Rugby club set for reunion

The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 29, 1989 - Page 11
Spikers to face Big Ten test'

by Bill Girardot
Daily Contributor
This weekend the Michigan Rugby team celebrates its
thirtieth year of competition by holding a very special
Old Blue weekend. Players from the past and present
will reunite at Mitchell Field at 11:45 a.m. on
Saturday, September 30. Four matches will be played,
pitting the best of yesterday's players against the best of
tdys stars.
The Old Boys, consisting of former Michigan
players, are looking to avenge last year's defeat while
the Young Boys are hoping to extend their winning
streak in this annual duel to two victories in a row.
Preparations for this anniversary weekend have been
going on for over three years and invitations have been
sent out to such former Wolverine rugby players as
actor Max Gail and University of Michigan President
James Duderstadt, who has yet to respond to the team's
invitation.
For thirty years the club has had nominal support
from the Michigan athletic department. But self-reliance

seems to be the way the team likes it. Many members
of the team feel that with athletic department financing
comes athletic department interference.
As team member Mike Lisi said, "We don't really
want to become a varsity sport since that would mean
we would be denying a lot of students a chance at
playing rugby. Now, we take everyone who really
wants to play, but if we became a varsity sport we
would probably be told by the athletic department that
we would have to limit the number on the team."
The Rugby team pushes hard to win but it also puts
victories into perspective. As Lisi said, rugby is a sport
to be enjoyed not marketed. As a result, all are invited
to join and everyone gets to see some playing time.
Lisi feels that if the athletic department sponsored
rugby, more players would be cut and tough budget
guidelines would soon be implemented.
As a result of this financial independence, much of
the funds for the team come from the donations of
former players who wish to retain ties to the club of
which they were once a part.

The Michigan women's volley-
ball team will head west this week-
end searching for its first Big Ten
victory of the season.
The Wolverines first serve on.
their road trip will be tonight in
Iowa against a strong Hawkeye
squad. Michigan will then travel to
Minnesota to face the Gophers on
Sunday.
Both of Michigan's rivals have
strengthened their programs over
the past year, and each is expected
to challenge Illinois for the Big Ten
title.
"I'm looking forward to us just
being able to play with these
teams," said Michigan head coach
Joyce Davis. "That's really the

goal. And to be in a position to
win the match requires enthusiasm,
communication, good defense and
blocking."
The key to victory might also
require some healthy bodies. The
- Wolverines have been plagued all
season with a flu epidemic.
Kristen Lang has missed the last
few practices with a cold. Hayley
Lorenzen has also been struggling
with the flu and a sore back. Mich-
elle Horrigan returned to practice
Tuesday after being out for a week
with a cold.
Lang and Lorenzen are both
outside hitters and if they miss the
upcoming matches, Davis will have
to do some line-up juggling.
The Hawkeyes are returning
with the same line-up that landed

them a second place tie finish with
Minnesota last season. Iowa is led
by middle hitter Barb Willis and left
hander Kari Hamel.
"Those are the two players that
we will key on," Davis said.
"Hamel will be the first left hander
we've seen this year so we'll have
to adjust."
Facing a southpaw can disturb
the flow of the Wolverine defense
since the offensive patterns the
Hawkeyes can run will come from
the reverse angles.
Defeating Minnesota will be an
even tougher task. The Gophers
defeated Illinois last Saturday, hand-
ing the Fighting Illini their first
Big Ten defeat in over three years.

The top runners from Michigan's
women's cross country team are
gearing up for the Eastern Michigan
Invitational today at the Huron
Country Club golf course.
-~ Of the 12 teams participating in
tithe Invitational, four are from the
Big Ten. Head Coach Sue Foster
said, "this upcoming meet is going
to be very competitive, it will give
us an idea of where we (rank) in the
'Big Ten this season."
i Returning to Ann Arbor after two
successful invitationah

igan runners look forward to com-
peting against Big Ten teams. The
recent second place finish to Penn
State (Michigan lost by only two
points) at the Western Ontario In-+
vitational has fueled the Wolverine
runners to practice hard this week.
Although All-American candidate
Mindy Rowand, who finished fourth
in last week's meet, is suffering
from a slight head cold, injuries
should not be a factor. Rowand said,
"its (the cold) not too bad but we
will see how it goes, everybody else
is pretty healthy."
Before today, coach Foster said

that Iowa would be Michigan's
toughest competition going into the
Invitational. But according to Eas-
tern Michigan's sports information
department, the Hawkeyes decided to
cancel the trip due to a short practice
week. Even with Iowa's sudden
withdrawal from the invitational,
Minnesota, Michigan State, Wis-
consin, and Indiana will make the
meet competitive.
A confident Jennifer McPeck,
who finished eighth in last week's
invitational, said "we will pull
together as a team and win it....They
should be worried about us."
