Stickers all tied up at home opener by Matt Rennie Daily Sports Contributer Head coach Patti Smith and her Wolverine field hockey team had hoped to open their home season in a big way. Instead, they played to a sluggish 2-2 tie against the Chippewas of Central Michigan. The tie brought their record to 4-3-2. Michigan's Patti Farley opened the scoring with a goal at 15:21 of the first half. The goal came off a sharp pass from Sharon Cantor. The Wolverines remained ahead, 1-0, at the end of the first half, but after 7:46 of the second, Casey O'Leary evened the count for the Chippewas. The roof really seemed to come down on the Wolverines when Jill Young rattled the cage less than five minutes later. The team didn't give up, though. Ilene Meadows answered 2:18 later for her first goal of the season. Neither team managed to find the net for the remainder of the game, despite several opportunities for both. Michigan senior goalkeeper Joanne Green came up with some big saves to keep the score even. "We seemed a step behind all night long," said Smith. "We let them dictate the style of game. I was disappointed that we didn't execute some of the simple skills like I thought we would. It was en- couraging that we could come back in limited time, though. That showed some character." 1 dIX XX X X U THE WOLVERINES stay home this weekend when they fac Ohio State at 11:00 on Saturday anA Ohio University at 10:00 Sunday. Both games will be held at Tartan Turf. The Ohio State game is an 0m- portant one for Michigan, especially coming off last night's performance. "It means a lot. We have to play harder and pass sharper. We also have to show where we stand in the conference," said Smith. The Buckeyes are winless in tw4 games in the Midwest Collegiate Field Hockey Conference, but they have an overall record of 4-4. Their offensive problems of last season, when they scored only 22 goals in 21 games, have continued this year, but head coach Karen Weaver sces some improvement. " "We're definitely getting more shots," she said. "I'd like to see us improve our short passing gatne give-and-go types of situations. We also need better positioning, but our opportunities have increased." One of the keys to beating Ohio State is containing Kim Finlayson, the Buckeyes' leading scorer and second-team All-Big Ten last season. "Kim's been here three years, and she's been very consistent. She's really been showing some leadership this year." Michigan hopes to avenge last season, when they were beaten and tied by the Buckeyes. "Hey, this is Michigan versus Ohio State," said Weaver. "I know they'll be ready." r^ - --- JUIUE HOLLMAN/Daiy Michigan's Ilene Meadows and a Central Michigan defender battle for a loose ball during Thursday night's match.
