Woman arrives

BY RICK SMITH
SOMEWHERE near Cape Town,
three Black women carry out a nor-
mal life of selling chicken, oranges,
and other goods on a street corner.
They bicker warmly with other,
shoo away schoolchildren thieves,
and flirt with male customers, hop-
ing for a sale. They also dodge bul-
lets and avoid getting arrested -
standard activity for Blacks in South
Africa.

The Michigan Theater opens its
1990 drama season with the criti-
cally acclaimed You Strike the
Woman, You Strike the Rock. The
Vusisizwe Players in conjunction
with South Africa's Market Theatre
Company will perform this stunning
portrayal of life under apartheid and
recreate the laughter and sorrow of
township life in South Africa with a
dazzling array of stories, dance,
song, and mime.
On August 9, 1956, about

30,000 women marched through
Pretoria protesting the racist Pass
Laws. "You Strike the Woman, You
Strike the Rock" was the title of the
song they sang, and it became the ti-
tle of the Vusisizwe Players' show.
The company is made up of three ac-
tors: Nomvula Qosha, Thobeka
Maqhutyana, and Poppy Tsira. The
three bring alive the spirit that al-
lows the Black woman to endure the
never-ending struggle against apart-
heid.
Mamble (Poppy Tsira), a witty
street girl, and Mampopo (Thobeka
Maghutyana), a migrant laborer's
wife, live for the present. They re-
main buoyant and solid when con-
fronted with daily oppression and
find satisfaction through survival. In
contrast, Sdudla (Nomvula Qosha)
knows the importance of standing up
for her rights; she's the wife of a po-
litical activist and took part in the
Women's March of 1956.

funds, is famous for productions
such as Poppie Nongena, Woza
Albert, and Bopha. With a converted
19th century fruit and vegetable
market as its home, the Market
Theatre has been at the forefront of
Black theater in South Africa and
around the world. The tradition of
makeshift theaters with bad acoustics
and sightlines, poor lighting, and lit-
tle money for costumes, props, or
sets that the Market Theatre bore
reaches a new triumph with You
Strike the Woman, You Strike the
Rock. Electrifying movement, stri-
dent voice, and joyous song more
than make up for the lack of elabo-
rate staging. Played against a dark
drop sheet using few props, this
show blends folk storytelling, the
morality play and a gospel revival to
bring the audience a recreation of
South Africa.
YOU STRIKE THE WOMAN, YOU
STRIKE THE ROCK plays this
Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Michigan
Theater. Student rush tickets will
be available for $8.

Take a long weekend
to find out if
it's the life for you.
What's it like to be a priest? If you're a young man sixteen or
older, and you're thinking about becoming a priest, you're
invited to Sacred Heart Major Seminary for a long weekend.
Spend the time with priests and with other young men like
yourself. In prayer and at play. Talking, listening. Helping you
make up your own mind. Relax. There's no pressure, and no
charge for the weekend.
If you think you might be interested, just tell your parish
priest. Or call Father Larry Delonnay at Sacred Heart:
883-8527.
