It's by Adam Benson Daily Football Writer J.D. Carlson could have gone to Yale. After getting his education there, he may have become an award winning scientist. "My mom wanted me to go to Yale," Carlson said. "She wanted me to go an Ivy League school. I always wanted to, but Michigan is just as good as an Ivy League school." But Michigan has not always recruited kickers. Carlson, like most before him is not on scholarship. Yet Michigan coach Bo Schem- bechler has found a way to ease the financial obligations for Carlson. "He's a good student, a biological student," Schembechler said. "He walked on here. I helped him out some last year, and then I put him mon a gran Not many grants and aid goes to place kickers, so place kick- ers check around." So instead of being confined to a lab in the Ivy League, he came to Michigan to be a football player. He may have to delay his future as a scientist, so he will have to settle for just being Sports Illustrated's Offensive Player of the Week after his four field goal performance against UCLA. Carlson can enjoy his fame, but only briefly. He still has too much work to do to get excited, or so he says. "MAYBE FOR one game, but it's only one game," Carlson said. "It's just like the Notre Dame game, I've got to put it behind me. I can't let it go to my head. I can't say that I'm a great kicker or that I'm a hero. I think it's more important for me, as a member of the team, to come back and kick well again." o The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 27, 1989 - Page 11 Carison boots Yale I s\\\ ponrIngIiiewt fnip 1111sRn the In 9 4 A A L-: 1,7 AlAlA A1 %hl . The week before, Carlson couldn't even boot the ball the necessary ten yards for the Wolverines to make a stab at recovering it. SO FEW people could feel con- fident about this second chance. In fact, even Carlson was feeling a bit iffy. "I didn't feel very confident going out there to kick it. I was kind of second guessing how I was going to kick it. Once it went right, it was like a big huge brick lifted offof me." It was one of the better on-side kicks, but Bo could remember one better. "That damn one Miami kicked (in Michigan's 31-30 loss last year)," he said. "When you get the right bounce, it's tough to recover. The kicking team has a great advantage, but you seldom get the bounce." But Michigan did. Once the kick was recovered, Carlson waited an- xiously, to finish off the Wol- verines' fabulous final effort. His feelings while on the sidelines could not be described easily, but they won't be forgotten anytime soon. "It is hard to put it into words. It is one of those things where I jump- ed through the sky. When things like that go right, the momentum for the team, there was no stopping us after that," he said. "We knew we'd won. It is unbelievable when things like that happen, it was just like last week, they either crush you or propel you." r t k Collect call to ChicagoForgeti t by Peter Zellen - Daily Sports Writer Now that the 1989 baseball season is in its final week with three of the four division races all but officially decided, it's time to reflect with a season recap and some premature predictions. -Isn't it great how the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago Cubs have proved once again that sportswriters don't necessarily know more than the, average fan. Both teams were universally picked to finish at the bottom of their divisions. -Anybodystry to call Illinois lately? Due to the three-day telephone lottery held for the 84,000 Cub playoff tickets available to the general pub lie several of the phone switching stations were blown out. -Waitaminnit, the Cubs are really going to the playoffs? -AL MVP - While others have better overall stats, Toronto's Fred McGriff leads the American League with 36 homers. The Blue Jays began their ascent in the division when their first baseman really turned on the power. -NL MVP - Not to take anything away from Kevin "Babe" Mitchell but his teammate Will Clark will probably win a batting title, has driven in almost as many runs as Mitchell with 20 fewer homers, and held the team in first place with his clutch hitting while the Giants were nursing injuries. -The Orioles were able to get to where they are by providing a relaxed atmosphere around a team of very young talent. They came out of it with an 18-game winner in Jeff Ballard and closer and probable Rookie-of-the-Year Gregg Olson (27 saves, 1.77 E.R.A.) Unfortunately this same young talent will probably choke under pennant pressure. Although Toronto's one to talk about having guts. Remember '85 and '87? -Storm Davis could be a 20-game winner with a 4.50 E.R.A. There's a lot to be said for offensive support. -No really, the Cubs in post-season play? -AL Cy Young - Dave Stewart will finish second for the third straight year. This time to Bret Saberhagen. The Royal ace has been consistently awesome all season and leads the American League in wins and E.R.A. Plus, Saberhagen had a 14-1 string during the season. -NL Cy Young - Has any pitcher been as consistent as Padres stopper. Mark Davis? He leads the majors in saves with 42 and also in save per- centage. What a curveball. -I don't know about you but I would be honored to be one of Nolan Ryan's 5,000 career strikeouts. -I don't want to get all teary-eyed and sentimental but it really is a shame what happened to Dave Dravecky. Bad things should happen to loudmouthed' obnoxious people, like Pete Rose. -If Sparky Anderson was a genius the last two years, what does that make him now? -If George Steinbrenner was a total moron then, what is he now? CINEMA DIRECTORT DAVID LUBLINER/DAILY Michigan placekicker J.D. Carlson runs onto the field before the UCLA- Michigan game last Saturday. Carlson booted four field goals in the win. His performance Saturday should help him do exactly that. "It's going to give me a lot of confidence. Before the UCLA game, I had never kicked a field goal in a game. I'll have a lot of confidence going into the next game." After his horrible performance against Notre Dame, Carlson needed a good showing against UCLA. Not just to keep his job, but to convince himself that he could play. His first field goal, a 43-yarder, provided him with confidence. "I was terrified lining up for (the field goal). I had no idea that it was going to go through," Carlson said. "It was kind of on the right side (of the field) and I kicked it right at the uprights. After arriving in the United States, Ed refused to meet -with President Bush but instead demanded to see the Griddes list of games for the week. Unfortunately, Ed, who's a sucker for Southeast Conference teams, picked Mississippi over Arkansas. The Razorbacks won, sending Shevardnadze to the local bar for a bottle of Vodka. "Next time, I pick only Pac-10," Ed slurred. Shevardnadze was edged by Dave Schiltz and A.J. Reigle, who picked all 20 Griddes teams correctly last week. Schiltz won the tiebreaker, however, picking the total number of points in last week's Michigan- UCLA game closer than Reigle. So, Schiltz gets the O'Sullivan's breakfast and Reigle wins a shot of Popov with Ed. Here are this week's games: 1. Maryland at Michigan 2. Notre Dame at Purdue 3. Miami (Fla.) at Michigan State 4.
