The Michigan Daily/New Student Edition - Thursday, September 7, 1989 - Page 7 :Coalition of Students with *Disabilities The coalition is an umbrella group for several organizations: 1. Learning "Disabilities Society, a support group for people with learning disabilities on campus. Besides support, it provides information about classes, professors, and study *aids to help overcome the dilemmas of being a learning disabled student. 2. Sighs of -the Times, a sign language club for beginners and advanced signers. 3. The Barrier Free Computer Users Club, which explores the latest adaptive hardware and software technology on campus. 4. Diabetic Network, a support group for students with or interested in diabetes. Committee for Campus Unity The committee's purpose is the promotion of a diverse and culturally pluralistic campus environment at the University. They try to provide culturally diverse programs and financial assistance to encourage minority recruitment and retention. English Department Minority Student Committee The committee's purpose is to network graduate and undergraduate students of color in the English Department and to address issues relating to minority students. Goals include recruitment, retention, and participation of minority -students. Free China Student Association -FCSA is an organization whose members are students, scholars, and their families from Taiwan. We provide much help for academic, living, shopping, and medicare problems to the members. Also, there are many social events that are held regularly throughout the .year. Free South Africa Coordinating Committee The committee is a multi-racial organization with a global perspective on racism, but fosucing on Southern Africa. Activities are both educational and action-oriented. Goals are to end U.S. support for South Africa and to educate students about Southern Africa. Hispanic Law Students Association The association is comprised of Chicano, Puertoriqueno, and other Hispanic law students The group's focus is the progress and advancement of Chicanos and other Spanish speaking people. Activities include working with local and national organizations on rural farm worker and urban barrio problems. Indian-American Student Association IASA is a non-profit organization interested in preserving the Indian culture while at the same time introducing it to the surrounding community. International Student Fellowship An informal association of foreign and American citizens for friendship and nonreligious activities as well as Christian fellowship and study. International Student Organizations (Not all-inclusive) Armenian Students Cultural Association Association of Iranian Students Hellenic Students on Campus Israeli Student Association Japan Club Netherlands American University League Nigerian Student Association Pakistani Student Association Polish Student Association Scandinavian Club Singapore Student Association Korean Student Association The purposes of KSA are the pursuits of Korean identity in a foreign culture, development of academic goals, the enhancement of mutual understanding among Korean students and the promotion of friendship between Korean students and other students. Latin American/Native American Medical Association LANAMA is a medical student service organization open to all students but designed for the needs of Latin American and Native American students. Activities include community service, recruitment and counseling of undergraduate pre-med students, and support from within medical classes to assure retention of Latin American 'and Native American students. Lesbian and Gay Rights Organizing Committee LaGROC promotes equality for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and other sexual minorities through political action. The group has no leaders and no membership requirements. Besides serving as a political action committee, LaGROC provides support and counseling to its members. Minority Residence Hall Organizations These groups, affiliated with different residents halls, offer independent cultural/political support for students living in dorms. South Quad-Ambatana West Quad-A'subuhi Minority Student Nurses Association The purpose of the organization is to facilitate the creation of an environment conducive to academic success through social and intellectual exchange. Muslim Student Association MSA serves Muslims in the University, especially new students, in their accommodations and orientation. Members are students from many different backgrounds, including Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, United States, the Middle East, and Africa. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People The University';s chapter of the NAACP seeks to eliminate racial prejudice, alert the public to the effects of racial discrimination, inform the University community of the problems of minorities, and to stimulate an appreciation of minority contributions to society. National Union of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Students. NUGAPS is devoted to social, cultural, and educational activities that will bring the members of the union, other students, and the rest of the community to a better mutual understanding not only of themselves, but the world around them as well. The union will promote the dissemination of true information about the Arab people, their history, culture, problems, and aspirations. Native American Students Association Besides offering support and cultural activities, NASA is a politically active group working to challenge stereotypes of Native Americans. Persatuan Mahasiswa Indonesia di Amerika Serikat PERMIAS is an Indonesian student association that helps Indonesian students become acquainted to their new environment and to arrange matters concerning their permits. Puerto Rican Association PRA is comprised of students, faculty, and community members interested in promoting the Puerto Rican culture at the University and in Ann Arbor. They aim to ensure effective communication among Puerto Ricans and Hispanics here and at other universities. Socially Active Latino Student Association A cultural and social organization, SALSA also serves as a support system for Chicano/Hispanic students. Its goals are to increase students awareness of Chicano culture and deal with issues pertaining to Hispanics at the University. The group participates in the Hispanic Heritage Week, the Hispanic Lecture Series, and the National Association for Chicano Studies Conference. Society of Minority Engineering Students SMES seeks to increase and to enhance the participation of minorities in the field of engineering. Activities include field trips, a mentorship program, and hosting speakers. Society of Women Engineers SWES, a branch of the international society, aims to provide career guidance and support for women engineers while preparing its members for an engineering profession. The group also tries to encourage high school women to pursue engineering, sponsoring a summer engineering exploration program during which 80 high school females stay at the University to get a better understanding of individual engineering disciplines., Men are also welcome to join the group. Student Women's Initiative Group SWING is an ad hoc group of interested women that discusses women's issues on campus. Representatives from all campus groups have attended meetings. The group often breaks into committees to discuss such issues as a campus women's center, diversifying curriculum, sexism in the classroom, and child care. United Coalition Against Racism UCAR is a group of students as well as non-students dedicated to the eradication of racism facing all people of color around the world. Their focus is local, national, and international. University of Michigan Asian Student Coalition UMASC's purpose is to promote unity and recognition among Asian Americans and to inform them of the issues facing Asians today. In addition to holding campus workshops and providing an Asian American political voice, UMASC will also network with other universities to build a national movement. Women of Color Group Organized through the Women's Studies Program, the groups if comprised of University students, staff, and faculty concerned with issues of race and gender and women's issues as they relate to women of color.
