ARTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, September 26, 1989 Page 7 Witness Poguetry in motion BY NABEEL ZUBERI THE Pogues ride into town tonight on the Michigan leg of their Peace And Love tour. Nothing wraps them up as neatly as the cowboy image - eight endearing rogues who tell tales of the demon brew, lost sweethearts, and the places they've been, as they sit around the campfire. In fact, the Pogues played a band of outlaws in Alex Cox's western Straight To hell. A gang in which every mem- ber is an integral part, the Pogues now more than ever make it plain that they are a band and not just Shane MacGowan backed up by a few hifty musicians; their latest al- bum Peace And Love (Island) is their most democratic yet, with Phil Chevron, Darryl Hunt and TerryWoods sharing vocals with Shane. In addition, many of the songs were written by Jem Finer, Andrew Ranken, Chevron and Woods. The record is definitely not just Shane's baby. Peace And Love is the Pogues' saddest record, which isn't to say it's depressing; but it has a feeling of loss that drifts over the listener that's not to be found on any of their three previous albums. "It's just re- ality," MacGowan says. "There's bad and there's good, and quite often there's both at the same time. There's love andtthere's death; there always has been and there always will be. But just because the songs are about reality, that's no reason to make the music boring and depress- ing. Music is about uplifting people, y'know?" Even the uptempo tracks on the album are like laughing to keep from crying. The Pogues may very well have come to an important juncture in their life as a group. Peace And Love sounds like the end of something. It's this sense of tran- sition which makes the record so ar- resting and engaging, much more so than If I Should Fall From The Grace Of God. As with all the Pogues' best work, there's a profound geographi- cal and spiritual rootedness - not just in Ireland, but the British Isles as a whole. London is the real home of the group. Again, there's a feeling of lost times and shattered hopes. "White City" is about the greyhound racing stadium which has been de- molished recently to make way for developers. MacGowan gives us a snapshot of old fellows mingling, sharing jokes and dreaming dreams as they bet on the dogs. A commu- COMPUTERS - Student discounts. IBM Compatibles. Call 747-9400 between 9-5. "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge" is a woozy, romantic ballad in the classic Pogues vein. It's with their ballads that the Pogues are at their most af- fecting and invigorating, not with those 'drinking songs' that have ine- briated fans slam dancing at live shows. "Boat Train" is another MacGowan photograph, this time detailing life on the Dublin-to- Holyhead ferry. The best song on the record is a love paean to the greatest city in the world; "London, You're A Lady" is the quintessential FOR SALE BOOKCASES, chairs, tables, chests, trunks, rugs, lamps, phones. 665-7184.
