Penn State ni by John Niyo Daily Contributor ps M' women's x-country Penn State seemed to always cross the finish line just in front of Michigan's runners last Saturday. By doing so, the Nittany Lions came away with the women's team title at-the Western Ontario Cross Country Invitational spoiling the debut of a new, healthier Wolverine squad "They just seemed to be right in front of us," head coach Sue Foster said. "I was basically pleased with the way the team ran, but obviously we were upset we didn't win. It was very close." Team scores showed how close the meet really was. Penn State had 68 points while Michigan was right on their heels with 70 points. The host school, Western Ontario, finished third with 81 points but the rest of the 14 team field was far behind. Eastern Michigan was fourth with 158 points. The meet was the first of the season for two of the squad's top seven performers. All-Big Ten runner Mindy Rowand and highly-touted freshman Molly McClimmon were both beset by preseason injuries and were unable to run in the Kansas Relays. Rowand picked up right where she left off last year, leading all Michigan runners and finishing fourth overall. "Molly was impressive. That was really good for her first race of the year," Foster said. Next for the Wolverines was senior Jennifer McPeck in eighth place. For McPeck, the meet was a homecoming of sorts. "Jennifer is from London, Ontario so she knows a lot of people there. She was really fired up about this meet and she ran a very strong race for us," Foster said. Foster also made special mention of the performance of junior Amy Bannister. Bannister crossed the finish line in 17th place even though she was unable to practice Thursday or Friday. The Wolverines will be in action again this Friday at the Eastern Michigan Invitational in Ypsilanti. 0 '6fre a ~a ud b. Bears top PONTIAC, MI (AP) - Barry Sanders has decided it's not worth the price to make a fashion statement in the NFL. Sanders, the Detroit Lions prize rookie running back who won the Heisman Trophy last year at Oklahoma State, appeared well on his way to a 200-yard game Sunday against Chicago. But he suffered a hip pointer early in the third quarter and didn't Lions, 47-27, despite Sanders "I learned today that you need them. I'll wear them from now on." Lions coach Wayne Fontes said Sanders probably could have gone back into the game, but he wasn't taking any chances with "the franchise" in a game that was already out of hand. "It was a direct shot from the hip," Sanders said. "It just kept getting stiffer and stiffer. I wanted Detroit Lions. Tomczak, who had completed only 40 percent of his passes this season, kept Chicago unbeaten, completing 17 of 25 for a career- high 302 yards in the Bears' 47-27 rout of the winless Lions.
