Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 22, 1989 BRUINS Continued from Page 1 Like Michigan, the Bruins have had a rocky beginning to their sea- son. Decimated by graduation, hav- ing lost top players such as All- American quarterback Troy Aikman, cornerback Darryl Henley, and out- side linebacker Carnell Lake, the Bruins dropped their season opener to Tennessee, 24-6. Last weekend, UCLA squeaked by San Diego State, showing signs of a team in the midst of a turbulent flux. In other words, the Bruins, who sport a .762 (79-23-5) winning percentage in the 80s, are not play- ing up to the level of play that coach Terry Donahue has come to expect. "We're not a good football team for many reasons," Donahue said. "We've got a young quarterback and I'm hopeful he'll mature quickly and that he'll bring our offensive team along. "But we're just not a good foot- ball team at this point in the sea- son." DONA H UE was talking via speaker phone at Michigan coach Bo Schembechler's Monday press lunch- eon. Donahue continued to lament about his team's trials and trib-ula-. tions as Schembechler knifed through his salad. "This year's football team is not a good defensive team. We gave up 250 yards rushing against Tenn- essee," the speakerphone crackled. "The intensity level is not very good and we lack speed in the field." Schembechler's body went limp and his eyes rolled it his eyebrows skyroc Either the fifth winn NCAA football hist rotten pimento or 1 buying what Donah elling. The 0-1 Wolverines g travel west with a shaky offensive line, depleted backfield and a redshirt frosh at quarterback. UCLA starts an inexperienced field general as well. i But the Bruins' 1-1 start can be attributed to a weak t defense that has given up 24 points to Tennessee and 25 t to San Diego State. The lackluster showings have Bruin r coach Terry Donahue saying publicly that his teamm needs to play harder if they are to compete this season. Donahue is not immune to criticism himself. UCLA cl supporters have charged the 13-year head coach with 9 being too conservative on offense. Many fans feel he did de not use former Bruin quarterback Tr6y Aikman to his b fullest. His detractors also feel that UCLA's offensive schemes are behind the rest of the football world. Haven't we heard that criticism about some other n football coach?
