ARTS The Michigan Daily Friday, September 22, 1989 Page 7 Lounge Cats claw at the '70s BY DONNA IADIPAOLO Celestial beings manning large hats will de- scend upon the earth on the half-moon, invading both the farm towns and the metropolis. On this day snot will run uncontrollably from the nose and humans will reach for the nearest piece of cutlery in defense of the giant clown. - passage from a recent Cap'n Dave and the Psychedelic Lounge Cats concert flyer. If you haven't seen this manifesto plastered around campus, experienced their concert, or talked with any of them, then you're most likely completely oblivious to what Cap'n Dave and the Psychedelic Lounge Cats are all about. I'm sure I'll never know, either. While psychedelic-lounge-funk music, a cou- ple of dancers wearing G-strings knitted from turkey breast filets (pulling out globs of cottage cheese from within) and flickering home movies as a backdrop may not purely be done for shock value - although the band was kicked out from stodgy Rick's and, read this as you will, they will go down in history as the last band, ever, to play the hallowed Beat. Instead, the band mem- bers convincingly tell me they have a defined philosophy (or perhaps an anti-philosophy) con- cerning their performance. The band likes to think of themselves as a cathartic experience: a kind of therapeutic way to rid themselves - and us - from the antics of a certain era, a time which has either consciously or unconsciously influenced us all in some way. Namely, the culturally crucial '70s. "The '70s was a crazy era where kids sniffed glue in auto shop and wore crazy fluorescent pat- terns and those great bellbottoms pants," says lead guitarist Dave Murray. "We're trying to come to grips with how that affected us now." While he denies any Freudian borrowing, Murray proclaims that by fully experiencing all these things from our childhoods, from Mr. Roarke to Bee Gee disco, we can come to grips with their absurdities. And he insists that the band's use of phallic symbols is also an intrinsi- cally important part of this post-'70s remedy. But these guys can play music, too. Or at least they can play. "Free James Brown," the band's most famous song, acts as a kind of disco tribute to the godfa- ther of soul and funk himself. The lyrics are seemingly meaningless - "Blame it on the PCP, don't blame on James set it free" - but borrowed James Brown quotes, combined with lead singer Cap'n Dave's splits, raps, and yelps all support the band's ability to capture this genre of music as well as captivate their audi- ence. According to some dedicated Cap'n Dave fans, another favorite tune is "Barbara Streisand is the Vodka of my Restaurant." This one starts with mellow guitar lounge music and light vo- cals, like the stuff you might hear when you walk into the bar of some Holiday Inn, and slowly delves into the psychedelic. Special ef- fects on flute, electronic distortion, and cheap im- itation jazz all heighten your sensations on this eerie acid trip. And of course, "Cuando, Cuando," their straightforward classic disco tune complete with a psychedelic blast, is always a true crowd-pleaser. All of the Lounge Cats' stuff in one way or another becomes a parody of something, in some way. Even when when the band plays originals like "Shake Your Booty," they're sure to include extensions like a big bongo or percussion disco jam. While their music, as well as their show complete with their very own "Quantum me- chanic clown body builder/dancer," have been de- scribed as hallucinogenic, off-the-wall, or multi- media avant garde, the outcome is usually the same: pleasant confusion. Main influences range from the Butthole Surfers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Stan Getz to James Brown and Parliament. Even at those times when the band members are just having fun, their goals remain in sight.
