It was an ugly loss, according to coach Joyce Davis. Though she said the Wolverines played at a high enough level to win, team lapses in crucial areas sealed their defeat. Defense was the key to the Michigan's loss. The Wolverines were ranked third nationally in blocking heading into the match, and Davis remarked that the key to winning was indeed blocking well. After the match, she maintained her stance, stating that her team lost because of poor blocking. She also cited a lack of communication on the court as a pivotal deficiency. The Wolverines committed a plethora of unforced errors. Capitalizing on such mistakes was Spartan junior Becky Belanger. Just as expected, Belanger owned the court, notching six kills in each of the first two games, and five in the third. "She did what she wanted. WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 We didn't contain her at all," said Michigan coach Joyce Davis. Jill Krumm accounted for much of the Michigan State offense as well, scoring 13 kills herself. Complementing the two frontliners was setter Susan Coscarelly, who averaged 18 assists per game. Karen Marshall spearheaded the Michigan offense. She and Belanger tied for the most kills with 17. "Marshall was their team leader. She gave us some trouble," said Spartan coach Ginger Mayson. Setter Autumn Collins, who suffered from the flu all week, played the entire match for Michigan. Davis had expected to use first-year backup Tarnisha Thompson, but Collins was "performing well," and Davis saw no reason to shake up the team by replacing the setter. The only first-year player to see action was 6'1" Hayley Lorenzen, whom Davis inserted for added size. Lorenzen first entered the match in the second game, with Michigan State leading 14-9. "I put her in in a pressure situation and she really pleased me with her performance," Davis said. In her first two plays, Lorenzen recorded two kills. Davis redshirted newwrecruit Kathy Drobitch earlier this week. The Wolverines travel to Iowa on September 29 and Minnesota on Oct 1. They return home October 6 to host Indinn UCLA dominated hoops, but not the gridiron, too by David Hyman Daily Sports Writer At one time or another, all of you have lost your attention in History, Political Science or Psychology lecture. You then begin to think about how much fun you had at the bar last night, how much work you have, the game on Saturday or of your high school friends. Now, its my turn to ramble on with some observations in the current sports world. I still find it hard to believe Michigan was the first team ever to win the Rose Bowl and NCAA Championship in the same year. Where was the Bruin football team when John Wooden led Kareem, Walton and the rest to 10 out of 12 championships in a row?...Can you believe Mark Spitz is trying to make the '92 Olympic team. Isn't this guy collecting Social Security yet? Did anybody catch the Tigers on Channel Four last Friday night? A station should break its television contract when a team is 27 games out of first place! ...I guess training camp is immaterial when you are an exceptional athlete like Barry and Deion Sanders. They were able to miss all the excitement of two-a-day practices and still collect a fat contract and become stars in their first weeks in the league. Speaking of Deion, did you notice who was chasing him on his way to the endzone in the first week. Mark Messner. Yes, our No. 60....And Tony Mandarich has yet to play a down. Forget about all his talk and nonsense, this guy can block (and eat) and Green Bay thinks he needs more time. What does he need more time for?....How much do all those yardage statistics in football really mean? The Giants have given up the most passing yards but are tied for first place with as 2-0 record. For all those baseball fans, wouldn't it be great to see a World Series game played under the blue sky and sunshine at Wrigley! Forget it. The Giants will be too strong if the Cubbies hold on.... Wasn't it Darryl Strawberry who attacked his team, saying the Mets had no spirit or desire to win a few months ago? Holding true to his words, look who had to be called out of the clubhouse in the top of the ninth with bases loaded Monday night, representing the tying run. Getting back.to the gridiron, how does Michigan Stadium average over 105,000 when the two signs outside the north and south sides proclaim seating capacity of 101,701? a 'A z a JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Kristen Lang volleys against Michigan State last night. Michigan sports an 0-1 record in the Big Ten after dropping three straight games to the Spartans, 15-7, 15-13, 15-9, at the new Varsity Arena.
