The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 19, 1989 - Page 11 o t 212.S \ o\.~ ~\ f \\ \\: rCr tK" C Oregon lottery game isreal gamble for all By Matt Rennie Daily Contributor It has ripped families apart, brought individuals financial ruin, and it may keep baseball's most prolific hitter out of the Hall of Fame. Despite this, it is now not only legal but encouraged in Oregon. What I'm talking about, of course, is gambling; more specifically, sports betting. Lottery players in Oregon have a new game play this fall in which they attempt to pick the winners of NFL football games. A player may wage from one to twenty dollars and pick four to fourteen games. Picks are made against the point spread. To win, all picks must be correct. I find it troubling that a state would sponsor an activity which, in any other forum, is illegal. Gambling, especially sports betting, many cases, is addictive. Sports betting is different from other lottery games because players think they can control their own destiny. A participant could arrive at the conclusion that a certain pick is a "sure thing." When this "safe" bet falls through, the losing player is tempted to risk more money the next time in order to make up for AP Top 25 1. Notre Dame 2. Miami, Fla. 3. Nebraska 4. Auburn 5. Michigan 6. Oregon is now telling its residents that it is okay to participate in this risky practice. It seems the state has placed a higher priority on making money than on the well- being of its citizens. The government is supposed to legislate against destructive attractions, not provide more. Perhaps even more disturbing is the media reaction to this story. CBS broadcaster Irv Cross said during a September 10 halftime feature that he found nothing wrong with the game. He defended his view. by stating that since illegal betting occurs regularly, this game gives people a legal outlet for their actions. Since murder also occurs daily, perhaps Mr. Cross thinks the state should sponsor a group of assassins as well. I am not naive enough to believe that illegal gambling does not exist, nor that anyone who places a five- dollar bet is a crazed addict. I do believe, however, that a state is wrong to make a profit off the potentially addictive actions of its citizens. By doing this, Oregon is taking a real gamble. Griddes hysteria still alive at the White House When George Bush is not busy holding barbecues on the White House lawn he is busy playing Griddes. Bush is not the only important statesman of our time to get wrapped up in the Griddes hysteria. Henry Kissinger has fond memories of trying to pry Richard Nixon away from his television set as Nixon busily tabulated his wins and losses on his Daily Griddes form. You too can join the fun. WALKER Continued from Page 10 Cubs Win! great leader on and off the field. I feel that Derrick possess qualities that represent a Michigan man. The respect that he greats from the coaches is respect that all players would want. "Derrick is very instrumental when it comes to getting us fired up. I know he is a capable captain." What has placed Walker on the verge of sainthood? His work ethic might be one answer. Between Walker and Grant, the Wolverines have two leaders who exemplify the benefits of hard work and dedication to the Michigan program. Walker would be the first to agree with that. "I'm not a rah-rah type of player," Walker said. "I'm not one who is going to run around and whoop it all up. I like to lead by example. If people see me hustling, or working hard in practice, than they'll say this guy works hard." And on top of that, Walker wants to still improve as a person. "I don't want to show anybody a fake personality. I want them to understand where I'm coming from and they understand when I do something, that's the way it should be done." As if that wasn't enough, he is also a great football player. "He does everything well," said Burton. "He's a pretty good tight end right now. He didn't have one of his better games against Notre Dame, but we're not to upset about that cause we know he is capable. He is pretty complete right now." Yet for all his accomplishments on the field, very little will mean as much to Walker as the distinction that comes with being captain. "This is probably the best honor I've ever received in my life," Walker said. "When you first come to Michigan, all you really want to do is play. To be named captain is like a bonus. I wanted the team to recognize me as a good player. But being named captain by my peers, people I've been around for three or four years, really makes me feel proud."
