SPORTS .Page '104 The Michigan Daily, Tuesday, September 19, 1989 Walker leads 'M' against 'I'm not a rah-rah by Adam Benson Daily Football Writer The only time you really see the job that captain has to do is at the beginning of the game: the coin toss. Michigan's Derrick Walker will call his first flip this weekend against UCLA. He seems a little nervous about his new job. "J.J. (Grant, the defensive captain) and I will call it, we'll talk about it," Walker said. "I'll let him call it, one of these days I'll get a shot at it. We'll probably stick with one call all year." Yet there is much more to the captain's role than just what the fan sees. Walker continues to learn what demands the team has for him. "I'm in a position where I have to accept a lot of responsibility. This week, I have to get the team up and make sure our attitude is still together. If I get down, and other see me that way, then others will get that way. I have accepted that." TAYLOR Continued from Page 1 Schembechler said that Grbac's height - 6-foot-five - adds a new dimension to the Wolverine offense because he can see down the field very well. "He can stay in there longer, look down the field longer. He stands tall and does it," Schembechler said. After Grbac's stunning aerial per- formance, the campus is brewing with notions that Michigan will forget about the run and bomb like mad. But don't forget who's the coach. "I don't think you can win in football with passing alone. And no matter how well we pass the ball, that's not going to satisfy me until we will be able to punch holes in the defense and run," Schembechler. said. "We're going to do that before this season is over." type of player. I'm Comebacks are nothing new for Derrick Walker. He has found a way to keep high spirits in the worst situations. Before his first season at Michigan, Walker needed knee surgery. His recovery would keep him out of the 1985 campaign and 1986 spring practice. Many doubted Now that everybody's brought back down to the ground, including the Michigan offense, here's another mind blower. Due to Bunch's knee injury, Schembechler said that he plans to "cut down on the offense." Bunch's normal replacement, Chris Horn, is out for the season, forcing Schembechler to play true frosh fullback Burnie Leggette. Add this player to an offense run by an inexperienced quarterback, behind a young offensive line, and you come up with an apprehensive Schem- bechler. "We've got a new quarterback and three of the interior line's all new so we're going to cut back on what we're doing and we intend to do it," Schembechler said. The extent of Bunch's knee injury' is not known, as it was drained yesterday and will probably be scoped in the future, Schembechler said. not one who is going to run around and whoop it all up. I like to lead by example. If people see me hustl- ing, or working hard in practice, they'll say this guy works hard.' -Michigan captain Derrick Walker that he would play football anymore. He would play again though, and he also improved - as an individual. "It has helped me deal with adversity and the other side of life," Walker said. "When something is bad, you always got to keen oin. Thus, the backfield will consist of Tony Boles starting at tailback, with Leroy Hoard alongside at fullback.~ Leggette, who runs a 4.6 40-yard dash at 210 pounds, will eventually play fullback as a backup. At quarterback, Ken Sollom and Wilbur Odom will make the trip to Pasadena as backups. As far as Taylor is concerned, he can't move and his availability will be a week- to-week decision. But despite the inspiring play from Grbac, Schem- bechler still regards Taylor as his No. 1 quarterback. "He's a good quarterback and we're counting on him. Don't even think that Michael Taylor won't be a damn good quarterback," Schembechler said. "I want him in there - he's five years experienced - but I want him practicing, too." Also not practicing and doubtful for the UCLA game is offensive lineman Dean Dingman, who is in UCLA to get it right. Bad things are going to happen in life and just can't give up. That helped me mature as a person." Offensive backfield coach Tirrel Burton added: "He came back from that his freshman year, which shows :hat he wanted to play and was willing to work hard to do it. I think that's a good example to the kids on the team." Now, Derrick Walker, Michigan's starting tight end, an all Big Ten candidate, and team co- captain needs to pass some of his dedication to his teammates. After the Notre Dame loss, Walker's confident karma must be passed on to other Wolverines in Los Angeles, as Michigan faces the Bruins. "He has always been somewhat of a leader, but now its even more important that he show leadership," Burton said. "After coming off a tough loss like we have, I think that he show the leadership ability." Wide receiver Desmond Howard concurs with Burton. "Derrick is a SEE WALKER, PAGE 11 the hospital with a "severe" strep throat condition. Schembechler said that Dingman has lost 30 pounds in recent weeks and regrets playing him against the Irish. "Now, I don't know when I'll get (Dingman) back. I was disappointed in the (offensive) tackle play." Schembechler said. "I never guessed we could play that badly. One was as bad as the other." Schembechler, who played both Matt Elliott and Steve Everitt at center against Notre Dame, said that this position is still a toss-up. With all these injuries and inex- perienced players, what the Michigan offense will look like against the Bruins on Saturday is also a toss-up. FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Donahue impressed with QB Grbac By Richard Eisen Daily Football Writer -UCLA coach Terry Donahue, who spoke at yesterday's luncheon via speakerphone, was very impressed with Grbac's performance against Notre.., Dame. "The performance that Grbac did Saturday was absolutely marvelous,". Donahue said. "He looked so poised, and he adds a dimension to the offense in terms of throwing." -Michigan placekicker Gulam Khan broke his arm during one o Raghib Ismail's kickoff returns Saturday, and impressed his coach in the., process. "With Gulam, the guy hit him and broke his arm in two places. And he got up and chased Ismail," Schembechler grinned. "Give the damn ki credit." -Schembechler continued to lament his team's poor kicking gamae yesterday, saying that Michigan "had too much respect for (its own) kickoff coverage and not enough respect for Notre Dame's return, and that got us in trouble." Schembechler added that three key special teams players, Dave Ritter, Chris Bohn, and Martin Davis, were out with injuries, contributing to. Michigan's poor kickoff coverage. All three will be out for UCLA,,- including Rusty Fichtner, who injured his hamstring against Notre Dame. As far as the punting game is concerned, Schembechler likened it to.; his golf game. "You ever get your driver in trouble and never get. it straightened out? That's what happened, and we'll take another look at punting this week."
