Blue field hockey team wins twice, 1-0 by David Schechter Daily Contributer The Wolverine Field Hockey team traveled west this weekend, adding two wins to their record by defeating the University of the Pacific and the University of California at Berkeley by identical scores of 1-0. "We dominated play in both games although the score does not indicate that," coach Patti Smith said. "We created a lot more opportunities. We maintained our composure and played our style of game." Providing the firepower for the Wolverines (3-2) were sophomores Sandie Marotti and junior Josee Charvet. In the first game against Pacific, Marotti drilled her game-winning shot past the Golden Bear defense, and Charvet capitalized on a penalty stroke against the Tigers. The West Coast trip demonstrated the strength of the Wolverines possession and passing abilities. "Sometimes we lose sight of the type of game we play and another team can take us out of our style of game. But these games have enhanced our play," Smith said. Smith hopes her six returning seniors will add to the experience of the squad. She notes that seniors Judy Burinskas, Sharon Cantor, Patti Farley, Joanne Green, Margaret Kundtz, and Ilene Meadows, "bring pride and determination to the team. Their unity and closeness is definitely helping us out on the field." The team hopes to improve upon last seasons 6-10-4 overall record. "Our record is indicative of where the team has gone," Smith said. "We're kind of building. The team is playing together." Defensively, Patricia Maran, Hilary Hughes, Sandie Marotti, and Patti Farley compose the strength of the Michigan attack. "They're tenacious. Defense is the beginning of our attack," noted Smith. The Wolverines finish out their western tour with a final match against Chico State late last night, a traditionally physical team. However, Smith shows optimism going into the Chico State game. "Hopefully we can put it together for one more win, and come home with three victories."
