One thing we don't know is how they'll handle the pressure because neither's been there.' - assistant coach Gary Moeller Junior Carlson hopes to avoid wrath of Khan 0 The Best in Sports MICHIGAN BY STEVE BLONDER If the Wolverines have one glaring question mark this season, is has to be the kicking game, where they have to find replacements for kicker/punter Mike Gillette. "If I could have one guy back from last year's squad, it would be Mike Gillette," Michigan coach Bo Schembechler said. "I'm not overly concerned about the place-kicking, but the punting is where we have ERS problems." J.D. Carlson appears to be a leg up on senior Gulam Kahn in the battle for the kicking chores, but a clear choice has not emerged. Kahn's strength is his accuracy, while Carlson has more strength in his leg. "I'm not sure if it's a case of who's the worst, but who's the best," assistant head coach Gary Moeller said. "We have been pleased with both kids. One thing we don't know is how they'll handle the pressure because neither's been there. "It's a good choice, not a bad choice." John Albertson also may do some kicking. One rule change which may affect the Wolverine kickers involves the loss of the tee. Previously, kickers could kick from a tee on field goal and extra-point attempts. Now, they can only use a tee on kickoffs, and Schembechler predicts many more kicks will be blocked as a result because the ball will not ascend as rapidly as it previously did. He said last week that the Michigan kickers have adjusted well to the change. The other question, which remains murkier, is who will be doing the Wolverines' punting. The two candidates are frosh Chris Stapleton and redshirt frosh Eddie Azcona. "The punting is improving a little, but I'm not ready to decide," Schembechler said. "We need to punt them some more under pressure." One worry both the coaching staff and Stapleton have is the intimidation factor: namely punting in pressure situations with over 100,000 people sitting in the stands. "I'm a little nervous," Stapleton admitted on media day. "The thought of starting is beyond anything I could imagine." Schembechler said before the start of fall practice, that he intended to spend extra time working on the punt. If Michigan decides to air it out, Taylor has plenty of dependable receivers returning in Greg McMurtry, Chris Calloway, Desmond Howard and Derrick Walker. Up front, Schembechler has a huge offensive line, led by Skrepanek, a 340-pound tackle, 290-pound tackle Tom Dohring, and 295-pound Which college sport guard Dean Dingman. Two hundred seventy- pound Steve Everitt is leading Matt Elliott in the battle to replace All-American center John Vitale, while 294-pound Joe Cocozzo is expected to start at the other guard position. Despite losing All-American defensive tackle Mark Messner and cornerback David Arnold, the Wolverine defense returns nine starters and has more all depth than in recent seasons. The strength of the Michigan defense will be the linebacking, where Michigan returns five players who started last year. Anderson, John Milligan, and J.J.
