a w ' 1 28 30 46 S 40 36 20 i0 CH DULE Non-conference opponents provide diffic BY ADAM SCHRAGER As if Big Ten competition wasn't difficult enough, Michigan will also have to face three formidable non- conference opponents in its attempt to garner its first- ever national championship. Standing most directly in the Wolverines' way is Notre Dame, the defending National Champions. The Fighting Irish return most importantly quarterback Tony Rice who is 16-2 as a starter and is one of the early Heisman Trophy favorites. "The key to beating Notre Dame is containing Tony Rice," said Michigan assistant head coach Gary Moeller. "I would think that their key would be to keep us from containing Tony Rice." In addition to returning Rice, the Fighting Irish possess a slew of other offensive threats, inlcuding Raghib "Rocket" Ismail and Ricky Watters. On defense, Notre Dame lost three of its linebackers but made up lt competition that loss with a strong secondary. Following Notre Dame, Michigan returns to its Jan. 2 triumphant location when it challenges UCLA in the Rose Bowl. UCLA, which suffered an early-season loss last week to upstart Tennessee, is forced to replace All- American quarterback Troy Aikman. Redshirt frosh Bret Johnson has the dubious distinction of replacing Aikman, but has an experienced tight end in senior All-American Charles Arbuckle and a solid running game in junior Brian Brown and sophomore Shawn Wills. The third and last non-conference game will also not be simple for the Wolverines. Maryland is 0-2 following losses against two nationally-ranked teams. The Terrapins lost 10-6 to 20th-ranked North Carolina State when highly-regarded quarterback Neil O'Donnell's pass was deflected in the end zone as time ran out.
