KICKOFF ISSUE The Lineup A look at this year's Wolverines Michigan Preview What's in store for the Champions, of the West? C. Snow The Good: Lots of people returning, including RB Carlos Snow, QB Greg Frey and WR Bobby Olive. The Bad: Maybe the toughest first month in the Big Ten, with Ok- lahoma State, USC, Boston College, and a trip to Illinois to start the Big Ten season...The controversial John Cooper, who maybe a good coach, but might not have the personality to win over Buckeye fans. Best scenario: 10-1. This team may match up the best against Michigan of any Big Ten school. Cooper seems to think that the keys to his team are more consistency from Frey and improvement from "the worst (defense)>I ever coached." Comebacks from LB Derek Isman and DT Mike Showlater can make that happen. Worst scenario: 7-4. Losses during that difficult September could mess upxsome Buckeye heads. Without Michigan State on the schedule, OSU should be able to put together a winning season easily. Comment: Maybe Buckeye fans aren't looking for a Woody Hayes- clone, but Cooper is not what they need either. Earle Bruce lacked 3 P. Snow The Good: Three potential All-Big Ten defensive players in DT Travis Davis, CB Harlon Bennett, and the new Spartan superstar, LB Percy Snow, the top candidate for replacing Tony Mandarich as the team's most interesting character ...Taking Mandarich's spot on the offensive line is Bob Kula, who won't be flexing on Sports Illustrated covers, but he may be an All-American type player... George Perles' defenses, which have helped make the Spartans one of the most physical teams in the Big Ten. The Bad: George Perles' offenses, which may be the most boring in the Big Ten...a schedule almost as bad as Ohio State's. The Spartans travel to Notre Dame the second game of the season, and face Miami (Fla.) and Michigan at home. Best scenario: 8-3. An upset of either Notre Dame or Miami (Fla.) would put the Spartans in position for another great season. QB Dan Enos develops into a strong field leader and the Spartans have a potent offensive attack. Enos should be able to make complete the short/mid-range passes that Perles plans to use in his offense. Worst scenario: 6-5. Enos gags and the offense dies. Don't worry about the Spartan defense, they will be tough and, that insures Michigan State of a winning season and a bowl birth. Comment: Perles's program has become one of the Big Ten's best, filled with interesting players under- neath the helmets. But Michigan State lacks excitement in their game plan. Even with the antics of characters like Mandarich and Andre Rison, the Spartans on-the-field play was difficult to tolerate. Their defense will hold teams like Indiana, Minnesota, and Iowa, while State may only score 15-20 points a game. They'll need more points to beat Miami, Notre Dame and Michigan. Perles may not have the firepower, but this maybe the kind of year where he should take a chance and find out. 2. Illinois George The Good: Coach John Mackovic has brought stability to a once scandal-ridden program...Returning eight players on offense, and ten players on defense...The planned Moscow game with USC will be moved to California, which ultimately will save the players a lot of added anxiety...The Great: QB Jeff George. The Bad: They still have to play USC, and then later Colorado, but they do have Ohio State and Michigan athome. ..every opponent will be up to play the Illini this year, no one will take them lightly...the loss of TB Keith Jones, leaving no one experienced in the Illini backfield. Best scenario: 9-2. When Jeff George shows all that he is the real thing, then Illinois willhcompete for the conference crown. Worst scenario: 5-6. This is what happens if George is not for real. Comment: What was once one of the truly ugly programs in the country transformed itself into a model for other trouble-plagued schools. Illinois has cleaned up. That in itself is a victory, but the Illini are also winning football games. Illinois can contend for a Big Ten title, and in 1990, they will probably be the pre-season favorite. George could be the conference's next super player, his success will dictate the future for Illinois football.
