Other students and student groups have also voiced concern about the administration. Last fall students protested the presidential inauguration, claiming that Duderstadt was an 'illegal' pres- ident, selected by University's Board of Regents in a "secret" search. Minority organizations, particu- larly the Socially Active Latino Stu- dents Association, also protested the administration last fall when a Uni- versity issued a report on minorities that contained many inaccuracies. SALSA members were unavail- able for comment. Another concern facing students is the ever increasing cost of tuition and how it will affect diversity on campus. "How do you get diversity if ev- erybody's going to be white upper class?" said recent graduate Kelly Anderson. Many high ranking University officials agree that one of greatest challenges Duderstadt will face in the future is funding for the University. With continued state underfunding of public institutions throughout Michigan, "a greater and greater bur- den will be placed on tuition," said Regent Thomas Roach (D-Saline). In addition to a recommitment to the 'intellectual values - the seek- ing of wisdom, freedom of inquiry, intellectual integrity, the discipline of the mind, respect for reasoned conclusions, democracy and justice,' Duderstadt's address focused on the importance of the 'C-values' - car- ing, concern, compassion, coopera- tion and communication, civility and comity. "He's very supportive of me and the Michigan Student Assembly," said Williams. Without Duderstadt'S confidence and support, he said he doubt that MSA would have received the budget increase that it did this summer from the regents. Atkins characterized Duderstadt as a very approachable and friendly per- son who tries to get out to meet and talk with students. Vest said that Duderstadt enjoyed the random appearances that he made to classes last year and he thinks that students were "disarmed and sur- prised" by his "openness and candor" in discussing the issues. Duderstadt works to enhance a "sense of collegiality on campus," according to Roach. We can have "enlightened discus- sions of the issues," said Roach and "we can talk with each other without shouting." See news happen?
