And while many of you are sunbathing on the beaches of Southern California or Florida or skiing the slopes of the Rockies, Michigan (10-7-1, 8-7-1) will iontinue to take the ice. On December 29-30, the Wolverines will compete in the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in hopes of defending last season's championship victory over North Dakota. In last year's championship game, Michigan rallied from a 5-1 third period deficit to score four goals in the third to even the score, capturing the trophy on a Mike Moes goal at 4:03 of the second overtime. In the first game, Michigan will face-off against Northern Michigan and will play either Michigan State or Michigan Tech, depending upon the outcomes of both games. After the new year, the Wolverines will host Lake Superior State for two games, on January 5 and 6. As of last week, the Lakers held the top ranking in the nation. 'M' women swim west by Jared Entin Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's swimming team will be enjoying their holiday vacation in Hawaii. Or will they? On December 22, the women swimmers travel to Honolulu to continue their demanding training schedule for their National Championship drive. The Wolverines have on their agenda not only three weeks of practices, but also two meets. The first meet, on Dec. 30, is against Hawaii. On January 2 and 3, the swimmers will participate in the Rainbow Invitational, which features teams who trained in Honolulu during the holiday period. Although none of the nation's powerhouses will be at the meet, many strong teams will be looking to knock off the fifth-ranked Wolverines. Michigan will not field its divers in either meet, largely because coach Dick Kimball does not want to disrupt the team's practice environment by even travelling to Hawaii. by Matt Rennie Daily Sports Writer Over winter break, the Michigan wrestlers will end one portion of their season and open another. The Wolverines will compete in their final pre-season open tourn- ament when they travel to Evanston for the Midlands, and they will face off against Lehigh in the first dual meet of the year. The Midlands, which will take place December 29 and 30, is widely recognized as one of the top meets in the country. This year is no exception as Oklahoma State (ranked 2nd in the country), Northwestern (11th), Indiana (12th), and Lock Haven (39th) will all send full squads to Evanston. In addition, other top teams such as Iowa and Iowa State will be repre- sented by some of their team mem- bers. While Iowa assistant coach Barry Davis was unable to confirm anything, he said that he would ex- pect Iowa to send All-Americans Mark Reiland and Tom Brands. The highlight of the Lehigh dual meet should be in the 190-pound class, where Michigan co-captain Fritz Lehrke, ranked 7th in the country, will take on Matt Ruppel, ranked 3rd nationally. Lehigh should provide a healthy challenge in the Wolverines' first taste of dual meet action, as they hold the 30th spot in the land. Midway through the year, they are well on their way to achieving that goal. Head coach Jon Urbanchek will take his squad into the holiday break boasting a dual meet record of 6-0, and strong showings in two invitational meets. Last weekend's swims were the last events scheduled for this calendar year. That means the swimmers will be spending the next few weeks studying for final exams and attending light practice sessions. The team will stay in Ann Arbor until December 21, when their well- deserved, but short, Christmas vacation will begin. On December 26, the team leaves for Boca Raton, Florida. There they will prepare for the Mission Bay Invitational, on January 5 and 6. The following weekend, Mich- igan will host Stanford University,1 in Ann Arbor. The meet will undoubtedly be the Wolverines' most revealing test of strength so far this year. "Stanford has the number- one ranked swim program in the country," according to Urbanchek. "This will be the focus of the dual meet season." Express yourself in Daily Arts Call 763-0379 '4 BIG TEN BASKETBALL FANS! FANTASY LEAGUE BASKETBALL PRESENTS: 2 The newest idea in sports games.
