I Canada mourns slain ,engineers MONTREAL (AP) - Nearly 4,000 mourners, led by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, attended a joint funeral mass yesterday for nine of the 14 women that a church leader said were brutally slain "in the beauty of their youth" by a mass murderer. Thousands of others stood in he- low-freezing temperatures, quietly listening outside to the 80-minute service on loudspeakers. Monsignor Paul Gregoire, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Mon- treal, presided at the service at Notre Dame Cathedral for the victims of the worst mass slaying in modern Canadian history. He noted that the women, almost all students at the University of Montreal engineering school, were killed "at a time when everything seemed to assure them of a brilliant future." Gregoire urged that in the mem- ory of those who were "brutally mowed down in the beauty of their youth," we should "seek to build a world of solidarity, a world of friend- ship." Many schools and universities throughout Quebec province ob- served a minute of silence as the Mass started in the Place d'Armes at 10:30 a.m. EST. A man identified as Marc Lepine killed the women in a murderous rage last Wednesday and also wounded nine women and five men The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, December 12, 1989 - Page 7 500 business students wilL flood to local conference by Gil Renberg Nine hearses, a flower car, and various passenger vehicles wait assembled outside Notre Dame Basilica yesterday for the funeral for nine young women killed at the University of Montreal last Wednesday. before committing suicide with his semiautomatic rifle. He shouted dia- tribes against feminists while roam- ing through three of the schools six floors. The 14 women were aged 21 to 31. One was a school employee. The others were students. "We have the tools in our hand !o build a better world, a world of peace," Alain Perreault, president of the students' association at the engi- neering school, said in a brief eu- logy. He spoke of the victims' dreams and hopes and pleaded, "let's achieve these great things... of hope, of un- derstanding." Roland Dore, the school's presi- dent and principal, said it was a le- gacy for survivors "to build a world of tomorrow, a world where every one of us, men and women, con- tribute equally." He called for building "a city of joy, a city of love." Families of victims, dignitaries, and students filled the cathedral in Montreal's historic center. The nine gilt-edged white coffins, each with a floral bouquet, were placed single-file in the cathedral's center corridor. Processions later di- vided for separate, private burials. Families of five victims had cho- sen private funeral services. Professional associations asked engineers across Canada to wear white armbands yesterday as a me- morial. On Sunday, at least 7,00 people paid respects to eight of the victims whose coffins lay in state at the uni- versity's columned hall of honor. Daily Staff Writer As thousands of students flee the Ann Arbor area for winter break, 500 business-minded students from all over the United States and the world - including about 30 from the Uni- versity - will flood Ypsilanti to participate in the annual AIESEC national conference, an international corporate internship program. AIESEC, whose initials stand for a French phrase meaning "The Inter- national Association of Students in Economics and Business Manage- ment," has chapters at more than 700 universities in 69 countries. About 15 University students will participate in AIESEC-run in- ternships with foreign corporations this summer. In addition to the usual West European countries, University students have interned in such exotic lands as Ghana, Brazil, Turkey, Greece, and the Philippines. During the Dec. 27-Jan. 3 confer- ence, which was held last year in Austin, Texas, members will hold a career fair and present forums on in- ternational business relations in the 21st century. In addition members will elect new officers. "One of the incredible things about AIESEC," said Julie Kietrys, the outgoing presidentofthe Uni- versity of Michigan chapter, "(is that) it is part of a global network." Members of AIESEC from all over the world are able to meet peo- ple with whom they have something in common, she said. Chapter members try to convince local corporations to set up the in- ternships, which can last from two to 18 months, and match students with those programs. AIESEC operates a one-for-one exchange; in other words, a chapter must create an opening with a local company for every internship its members receive abroad. The local AIESEC chapter has convinced firms such as Chrysler, Unisys, and Domino's Pizza International to hire foreign AIESEC interns. Interns are taken care of by mem- bers of the local chapter, who help the foreign students find housing and learn their way around the foreign country. Kietrys, who worked for a gun factory in the Philippines under the program, said the local chapter is expecting 15 foreign interns in a few months. Socializing with the interns is special, she said, because "yoga learn about other places without aq- tually going there." AIESEC claims to be the largest non-profit, non-political student ot- ganization in the world. LSA junior Chris Lin, marketing director of the University chapter, said it ins "perhaps the most dynamic student organization in the world." Most of the students attending the conference will be from the 76 other American universities. How- ever, students representing chapters in Europe, Africa, and Latin America will also attend. - - . r -. 2Wm~rv-. Let Them Know How You Feel!!
