Heaphy basks in Spartan shadow by Eric Lemont Daily Hockey Writer EAST LANSING - In a high profile program like Michigan State, it's easy to get overlooked while playing with scoring sensations Kip Miller and Pat Murray. But the Spartans didn't become the No. 3 team in the country with the help of just two players. Michigan State showed their versatility this weekend with a diversified scoring attack- an attack led by junior rightwinger Shawn Heaphy's six goals. "Shawn's got a tremendous shot and he showed it tonight," Michigan State head coach Ron Mason said after Heaphy's hat trick saturday night. "You get him the puck in the slot and he'll score it." Heaphy's goals came at oppor- tune times for the Spartans. He put MSU up 2-1 on a power-p[ay goal with 5:12 left in the first period of Saturday night's game. And when Michigan came back to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third period, it was Heaphy again who slammed the door shut on Michigan's chance for a victory with his 14th and 15th goals of the season. Heaphy's game-winner came off a two-on-one break with Spartan left defenseman Steve Beadle. "(Beadle) faked the pass and the D-man froze up. It was a heck of a pass," Heaphy said. Heaphy added an insurance goal with just over two minutes left to make the final score 5-3. His play proved crucial in Sunday's game as well. He added another three goals including what may have been the Spartans most important one. After Michigan had whittled MSU's 5-0 lead down to 5-4, Heaphy rifled in a rebound off a Pat Murray miss. His goal sealed the victory. Heaphy's game took off in the middle of last season when Mason switched him from center to right wing. "It helps that he's so fast," Mason said. For now, Heaphy is proud to play in the shadows of players like Miller as long as Michigan State continues to win. "(Miller) is a legitimate Hobey Baker candidate and we're in first place. That's not overlooked by anyone." ! JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Wolverine rightwinger Dan Stiver brings the puck up in Sunday's contest at Michigan State. Trailing Stiver is Spartan leftwinger Peter White. The 11-4 Spartan victory left Michigan with an 8-6-1 CCHA conference record. U 11 _ 1 'Michigan right-winger Ted Kramer learned Saturday that his season picks placed him into the bottom five of all the entries received throughout the year and was pretty upset. However, Kramer learned between periods of Saturday's hockey game against Michigan State that Wolverine assistant coach Mel Pearson had finished the year with the best record before the final bowl games. "Okay boys," Michigan coach Red Berenson told his team before the third period, and the Wolverines trailing 3-2, "get out there and skate. Skate hard boys. This is Michigan sons. We play to win - like Mel wins at that Daily's Griddes. He picks winners. We play as winners. And how the how hell, Kramer, could you ever pick Northwestern over Michigan State? Well, who could pick us over State in hockey? Never mind." Upon learning this, Kramer threw off his skates, raced over to the Daily at 420 Maynard. Kramer tried to sneak a peak at his coach's selections, in hopes of finally winning dinner for two at O'Sullivan's Pub and Eatery. Claiming he was Pearson, Kramer claimed he needed to double check his picks. Kramer was caught, headed back to the arena, and finished playing the third period. He has been disqualified from future Griddes. Everyone else can turn in their picks by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Limit his unsavory type to none a game. Dines wore jersey No. 31 (not in your program) and was Michigan State's No. 1 cheerleader at Saturday night's game at Yost. Listen to Dines describe his craft: "You see, we usually have three sections at State. One chants 'M' then '5' then 'U'. The only problem is everybody wants to be in the 'U' section. Tonight, though, we only had two sections so we had to amplify it a little bit." And they sure did. Michigan State won the game on the ice and in the stands. Here are some lowlights from Saturday night's game: -After Pat Murray put Michigan State up 1-0, the place erupted. And not in boos. A Green Wave, or roar, pierced through the arena, and the cacophony lasted a good minute. The Applause-O- Meter read Michigan State 1, Michigan 0. * At the end of the first period, as the teams skated off the ice with State up 3-1, the Spartan faithful rose to their feet in raucous applause. The Wolverines had the Michigan Pep "to Dismal" Band playing "Hail to the Victors," in B (very) flat. Michigan State Applause-O-Meter 2, Michigan negative-1. - With 1 minute left in the game, State fans tauntingly waved goodbye to the Wolverine hockey team. Families of four, for crying out loud, were getting into the act. What is an impressionable five- You can't dispute it, State's fans are best year old doing waving at hockey players four times his age, anyway? Aren't there bedtimes in Lansing? State 3, Michigan 0 on the old A-O-M. In truth, it is the Michigan fans that deserve a lambasting. Why? Well, let's go back to our old frien4 Dines: "It's pretty obvious that they just sit on their hands and don't do too much," he said. Who asked Dines for his two cents - even if he is right? One Michigan fan said it "was disappointing that we aren't more rowdy. It was the same way for Ohio State. We need to be in the game a little more." No, Michigan fans have to be at the games a little more. Yost was sold out Saturday night in large part because of a massive MSU contingency. Michigan State, on the other hand, has sold out 78 consecutive games because hockey is viewed there as being on par with football. The festivities in the stands at Munn Ice Arena on Sunday included dueling sections of fans, on opposite sections of the rink, chanting "GO GREEN - GO STATE". They also took pleasure in yelling "Shar- pies! Sharples! U-G-L-Y! You ain't got no alibi!" Sharples eventually left the game. Rumor had it that a smattering of Michigan fans made the trip to East Lansing. There's no question that the Spartans outplayed Michigan in the weekend series. They pounced on the Wolverines from the very beginning and, outside of several second period lapses, outskated and outworked them as well. Michigan will have to play better in big games and can only be helped by Wolverine fans winning the battle of the bleachers, or at least entering the contest. "We had four breakaways tonight and we didn't score on any of them," Michigan co-captain Moes said. "I think (the power play) was where the difference was tonight." With the score tied, 1-1, 11 minutes and 30 seconds into the first period, Michigan took a two-man advantage on two Spartan penalties. But three minutes later, the situation shifted to a two-man advantage for the Spartans when Ted Kramer and Todd Copeland headed for the penalty box. Only 27 seconds after Cope- land's high-sticking call, Heaphy gave State a 2-1 lead by knocking in a rebound for his first of three goals. "We took two penalties on the power play," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "Dumb penalties." State went up 3-1 when Steve Beadle took a crossing pass and beat Sharples. "They took advantage of us," Berenson said. "We were waiting to see what State did rather than play our own game." But the Michigan comeback began when the Wolverines had fewer men on the ice than did MSU. The Mich- igan penalty-killing squad cam4 through with a shorthanded goal when Ryan Pardoski netted a rebound to make the score 3-2. Late in the second period, Ted Kramer emerged from a melee in front of the State net with a goal to even the score at 3-3. Shortly after, Denny Felsner and Rob Brown blew Wolverine breakaway opportunities. "I saw Felsner taking his time,'1 Spartan goalie Jason Muzzatti said. "So I thought I'd try to surprise him. I guess it worked." Then the biggest Wolverine miscue of all occurred with 9:30 remaining in regulation and the game deadlocked, the Wolverines broke out on a three-on-one breakaway. But a botched drop pass wound up on Beadle's stick and4 turned into a three-on-one for State. Heaphy netted his second goal for the game-winner. The Spartan rightwinger then completed his hat trick on a 20-foot slapshot to seal the 5-3 win. "We got outplayed in every part of the game," Sharples said after Sunday's loss. "They showed us why they're one of the top two or three teams in the country, and why we've got a little ways to go." JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Spartan Walt Bartels skates in front of Wolverine Alex Roberts.
