They were satisfied but they were not really satisfied. My wife and I made a commitment to ourselves that if we stayed here, we were going to try to change this community." The former mayor criticized many of the affluent Blacks who are con- cerned only with their own success for not becoming involved in the problems of the city's poorer Blacks. "There are a lot of myopic Blacks in the community who don't have time or who think that since every- thing is all right for them, it is all right for everyone," he said. "They are concerned with going to basket- ball and football games and to their social engagements." Wheeler also criticized the Uni- versity for failing to meet its com- mitment to hiring more Black fac- ulty. The Black faculty the Univer- sity does hire are not aggressive and are easily intimidated, he charged. "They hire who they want and wher they 'hire them, they hand- string them," Wheeler said. " I want this community to be as much for, me as for anyone else." " UV-A Safe 9 No Burning he future of Ann Arbor is anyone's guess. Though* recent events like the* yearly Diag "Hash Bash" and the Homeless Action Committee (HAC) takeover of city council might portend a more activist future for the city and the campus, Repub- lican victories on city council show that any liberal battle will be uphill. Mayor Jernigan, a Republican, is launching an effort to rescind the city's legendary $5 pot law, one of the more visible manifestations of the Ann Arbor of 20 years ago. Meanwhile, HAC is trying to pre- vent the city from tearing down a house on South Ashley Street and building a parking lot. The success or failure of these campaigns might give an indication of how a conser- vative city will deal with its liberal past.
