This time, it's the Club Sugar Ray, but there promises to be the usual assortment of gangsters, music, dancing, and comedy. But it's also one of the worst films in recent years. THE LITTLE MERMAID It's Disney's 28th full length animated feature, and their first animated fairy tale since Cinderella came out 30 years ago-and it's a ,gem. Charming yarn about a lovely mermaid who longs to be a human so she marry a prince she has fallen in love with. But first she must deal with Ursela, the evil squid, who has other plans. At Showcase: 11:30, 1:25, 3:15, 5:15, 7:00, 8:45, 10:30, 12:00. LOOK WHO'S TALKING Bruce Willis is a wise-crackin' baby who presents the pre-natal world from a different view. Cheers' Kirstie Alley is the mother looking for the perfect father- which she finds, believe it or not, in John Travolta. At Briarwood- 12:30, 2:30, 4:40, 7:30, 9:30, 11:30. At Showcase - 12:55 2:50, 4:50, 7:35, 9:30, 11:45. PRANCER With a title like this, how couldn't it be a Christmas movie? Jessica Riggs, a 9-year old farm girl, finds a wounded reindeer she believes is Santa's. Apparently it was out flying alone. So she sets out to return it to St. Nick. I guess we finally find out if Santa is real. At Fox Village: 7:00, 9:15. At Showcase: 12:30 2:45, 5:05. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW You've seen it a few dozen times. You've been showered with rice. You know all the lines and scream them out with everyone else. It's that old cult favorite, nearly 15 years old, but still going strong. At Briarwood, F & S- 12:00 a.m. SHE-DEVIL What happens when Meryl Streep and Rosanne Barr tangle in the same film? STEEL MAGNOLIAS The stories of six southern women and their relationships are told in the new, long-awaited picture from director Herbert Ross. At Showcase: 12:20, 12:50, 2:40, 3:10, 4:55, 5:25, 7:20, 7:50, 9:40, 10:10, 11:55, 12:20. -Tony Silber 14 I)ININ4p U & ... . " IPIIKIN and finally to 1955 where they run into the original film. So we'll close it up with his last film, appropriately enough, about prosti- tutes and a city of shame- sounds like the northwest side of Detroit. MR. SMITH GOES TO WASH- INGTON (Frank Capra, 1939) MLB 3 7:00 Get out your flags and patriotic hearts and come see why America is so great, as honest country bump- kin Jimmy Stewart becomes a U.S. senator and fights corruption in the world's most exclusive club. A bit aged, but it still leaves that big of' American lump in your throat. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (John Carpenter, 1981) MLB 4 7:00 & 9:15 The story is dumb as hell, but putting realism aside, this is a fun movie with some great music. Wishful thinking, but New York is transformed into a maximum secu- rity prison in 1997. The President and Air Force One crashes inside the city, and Vietnam vet-turned- criminal Snake Plisken must get him out in 24 hours. Science-fic- tion-adventure fun. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (Frank Capra, 1946) MLB 3 9:20 It's so sappy, it'll make you gag, but that irresistible Yuletidc spirit is wonderful, and how can you celebrate the holiday season without a screening of this immor- tal monument? Jimmy's guardian angle finds him on the verge of sui- cide and shows him what life would be like without him. QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE (Edward Bernds, 1958) Aud A 7 & 10 Zsa Zsa Gabor, soon to be star- ring in Penitentiary 4, headlines a spectacular cast in this epic adven- ture of a crash landing on Venus where the planet is dominated by beautiful women. Featuring ray guns and other incredible special ef- fects. THE ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN (Nathan Hertz, 1958) Aud A 8:30 Don't judge a movie by its ti- tle, except this one time. BLADE RUNNER (Ridley Scott, 1982) MLB 3 9:45 Harrison Ford stars in this flashy, hi-tech futuristic thriller about murderous human-look alikes called replicants who are wreck ha- vok on a bizzar-looking Los Ange- les. Good special effects, music, and production, but not much else. SATURDAY SWIMMING TO CAMBODIA (Jonathon Demme, 1987) Hillel 7:00 & 8:45 A 90-minute monologue by Spalding Gray about the making of The Killing Fields as well as life in general should be a bore, but it isn't. Fascinating storytelling and and artistic direction make this one a gem. BATMAN (Leslie Martinson, 1966) MLB 4 7:00 & 9:05 Before bat-fake Michael Keaton, there was Adam West and his trusty sidekick, Burt Ward as Robin. Much better than last year's confu- sion-these guys are just crime- fighters, plain and simple without overlong, complicated storylines which make little sense and crazy Prince soundtracks. HEAVY METAL (Gerald Potter- ton, 1981) Aud A 10:15 Mindless adolescent vignettes in the magic of animation deal with a variety of inane topics, such as N.Y.C. cabbies. Featuring anima- tors the world over and the voices of John Candy and Harold Ramis. WINGS OF DESIRE (Wim Wenders, 1988) MLB 4 7:00 & 9:30 Last year's sleeper winner tells the heavenly tale of an angel (Bruno Ganz) who falls in love with mortal Solveig Dommartain. One of the most interesting films of the decade and Wim Wender's best to be sure. TOMMY (Ken Russell, 1975) Aud A 8:00 The original rock opera, cine- matic awe-inspirer that is still great if you see it on the big screen. And besides the Who, what a cast- including Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, and Jack Nicholson. Featuring the music from one of the great albums of the rock era. SUNDAY DETOUR (Edgar G. Ulmer, 1946) Lorch 7:00 Film buffs cling to this and why I don't know. Cheap melodrama about hitchiker who gets involved with women and murder and the un- derside of life. Film noir supreme. DOUBLE INDEMNITY (Billy Wilder, 1944) Lorch 8:15 Fred MacMurrey plays the un- suspecting insurance salesman co- erced into a murder plot by the al- luring Barbara Stanwyck in the classic story by Raymond Chandler based on James Cains' novel. Also starring Edward G. Robinson. In- spiration for Body Heat. -Tony Silber presents the Movie Goer Special $19.50 2 choices 2 Beverages of entree (soft) 2 English Fries 2 Movie Tickets Good Any Day-Any Time' Tip Not Included Briarwood Mall 668-7500 JAPANESE RESTAURANT (formerly Donburi) Enjoy the 4* ".. luIxury of a Chinese atmosphere L the mand~arin~ 1 215 S.
