This will be the first meeting ever between the two squads. And though the Bobcats' record is only 2-2, Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege is cautiously aware of the fragility his 4-O record carries. "Ohio U. is extremely tough in- side," he said. I have a real strong concern, based on the fact that we have not been very strong inside." Among the Bobcats who will try to hand Michigan its first loss are center Dawn Heidman and guard/ forward Kelly Weir. Weir averages 11.3 points per game, and Heidman has tallied an average of 13.3 points per game with an impressive 11.3 rebounds. Only two Michigan players, Trish Andrew and Tanya Powell, are aver- aging over five boards. But Powell's rebounding is part of a bigger picture. Having entered the season as Michigan's third all-time leading rebounder, Powell has already passed the former number two player, Lorea Feldman (610 Rent Condo - Located on Beach So. California Beach Club Oceanside Dec. 29th to Jan. 5th sleeps 4 - $125 day or $800 week Call Tom/Lois (209) 389-4850 rebounds), by boosting her total to 631. Abby Currier, who played from 1978 to 1981 and totaled 747 rebounds, is the only one left for Powell to beat. She needs to average just over five boards a game for the rest of the year to break Currier's mark. "I'm right on track-it's one of my goals this year," Powell said. The senior forward, however, has not forgotten her team in the run for number one. "It's important for me to rebound; if I don't, I don't think I've played a good game." VanDeWege is also enthused. "I like to see all those records over- taken. I recruited her to rebound. I knew that was going to happen when she came here, and she's done exactly that. So I think it's very fitting that she gets it." Other Wolverines to watch will be junior co-captain Carol Szcze- chowski, who hit six of eight field goals and both her free throw attempts against Western Michigan on Wednesday, and Leslie Spicer, who contributed 12 points in only 16 minutes of floor time. Free agent Moseby signs two-year deal with Tigers Michigan guard Carol Szczechowski drives the ball down the floor. Forward Joan Rieger is downcourt on the wing. Szczechowski whips the ball across court. Rieger grabs it and goes in for an easy lay-up. Clunk. 6'3" Wolverine center Val Hall posts up against an 6'0" opposing center. Hall gets the ball and pops from three feet. Thud. First-year forward Trish Andrew rebounds Hall's missed shoot, and pushes the ball towards the net from a foot out. Rattle. Missed lay-ups and wasted opportunities have slowed the women's basketball team's pace against their pre-Big Ten season opponents. When the Wolverines took on Eastern Michigan last Thursday, Hall didn't make a single field goal in eight tries. In the same game Andrews went 3-9. Against Akron on Sunday, Rieger went 0-6. And Wednesday night, Hall struggled to make one bucket in ten tries against Western Michigan. "It's a mystery to me." said Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege. As a whole, however, the team shooting percentage is well above 40%. Szczechowski, guard Tempie Brown, and forward Leslie Spicer have each been hitting shots from beyond fifteen feet. Michigan's outside shooting has spread the defenses and sparked the last three Wolverine wins. But it will be extremely difficult for all three to maintain their touch throughout the year. What's disturbing is the competition Michigan has faced has been greatly outmatched in height and weight. "We were a better team physically and that's why we won the game,' VanDeWege said after beating the Akron Zips, 76-61. "We did not execute or out-play them in any facet of the game." Offensive execution is part of the problem. The Wolverines have been setting brilliant screens to free the small forwards on the wing, but inside, the picks have been almost non-existent. A major reason why Hall is strug- gling is the fact that she has had defenders in her face a majority of the time. Another factor could just be nerves. Andrews has made several baskets from outside eight feet. But for some reason she ends up rushing and sending up awkward shots towards the backboard while in the paint. Hopefully the pre-season jitters will smooth out. Come January 5th, the Wolverines' size advantage will shrink to zip as the Big Ten season begins. JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Michigan guard Carol Szczechowski hopes to lead the Wolverines past Ohio University and increase Michigan's undefeated record to five. NASHVILLE (AP) - Lloyd Moseby, Toronto's all-time leader in nine offensive categories, agreed to a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. "Moseby brings us several pluses," Tigers general manager Bill Lajoie said. "He's a proven center fielder, he gives us more left-handed power and he's been a base-stealing threat throughout his career." Gary Pettis, who played center field for the Tigers last season, signed as a free agent with Texas. Moseby slumped last season, hitting .221 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs. Moseby's best year was 1987 when he hit .282 with a career-high 26 homers and 96 RBIs. 11 Rose Bowl Get the COMPETITIVE EDGE and land the BEST job when you finish school!
