De La Soul wears daisy chains instead of gold chains

Captain bunch
The infamous Captain Dave and the Psychedelic Lounge Cats plan to
ham it up in true postmodern fashion at the Blind Pig tonight, around 9:30
p.m. These people are singlehandedly responsible for the consistent
shortage of cool stuff at Value Village. They play well too.
Read Jim Poniewozik Every

BY NABEEL ZUBERI
ONLY De La Soul could have Liberace, Daryl
Hall, Sly Stone, Steely Dan, and Michael Jack-
son all on the same record and get away with it.
Posdnous (Plug One), Trugoy the Dove (Plug
Two), and Pace Master Mase (Plug Three) are
coming towards the end of a Euro-American tour
that has consolidated the success of their ground-
breaking and strictly massive Three Feet high
And Rising album.
Posdnous is very satisfied with the response
to the D.A.I.S.Y. (Da Inner Sound Y'all) age
groove thang in Holland, Belgium, and Britain.
"There was a great reaction to us," says Posd-
nous. "There it's kind of more special. They
value it more. Audiences in Europe are like those
at our early shows in New York, but they're def-
initely more racially mixed." Both "Me, Myself
& I" and "Eye Know" have been huge pop hits
on the other side of the Big Pond.
A large part of the appeal of De La Soul is its
disavowal of the clichds that plague most of male
rapdom. Instead of gold chains and designer track-
suits of questionable color-coordination, the three

Plugs favor more of a mixed bag. There's a pen-
chant for paisley rather than Gucci, Lennon specs
rather than wraparound shades (a la Kool Moe
Dee). Check out the anti-commodity fetishization
of "Take It Off" in which the guys exhort us to
whip off all those nasty hip hop items. Of
course, even though De La Soul is against the
dominant style, you can bet they spent some
time cultivating their own Carnaby Street look.
They also have the coolest haircuts in popular
music.
In the "Me, Myself & I" video, De La Soul
has much fun at the expense of macho rappers
learning all the same poses at the "Hip Hop High
School." Did this piss off the majority of these
hardcore rappers? "Actually, they liked it. A lot
of them say they that they were afraid to be dif-
ferent; but they're doing their thing and we're do-
ing ours. We know a lot of them, and they like
our music. We love the (Big Daddy) Kane and
Public Enemy, and they love us," says Pos, who
has been known to wear an NWA t-shirt.
As for most young men, sex is a big thing
for De La Soul. But Pos, Trugoy, and Mase cel-
ebrate the joys of the penis (rather than phallus)

on songs like "Jenifa" and "Buddy" without dissi
ing women. And there's always a note of iron]
and self-deprecation that keeps the testosteron
level in check. The De La Soul boys are funk'
and funny without resorting to the novelty antics
of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. As the Sale
vador Dalis of the Dancefloor and the Tristan
Tzaras of the Turntable, De La Soul's music has
the spirit and verve of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck,
Pee Wee Herman, Dada, and surrealism. There's
much to be said for the little subversive pleasures
offered each time De La Soul samples something
incongruous. Posdnous says that most of th)
samples come from their parents' records and
from producer Prince-Paul's (of Stetsasonic) vast
collection.
After their remaining U.S. dates, the group
will be going into the studio with piles of vinyl
to start recording their second album. But PoN
says that they aren't performing any of the newv
material on this tour: "We'll try it out on audi-
ences in the new year. That will give time for the
ideas to settle." The new album should be out in
May or June.
