(AP) - Joe Carter moved closer to the San Diego Padres, as rumors began to turn into reality at baseball's winter meetings Tuesday. "I know San Diego is a great place to play, you couldn't go wrong there," Carter said from his home in Kansas. "It's definitely true that something finally seems ready to happen. "I know it's nice there," he said. "And I know the Padres have a good team." * Free agents Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and Bill Gullickson appeared headed for new homes, and Hubie Brooks, Pete O'Brien, Storm Davis and Craig Lefferts went looking. Philadelphia thought about sending out- fielder Von Hayes to Los Angeles and also considered a deal with the Padres. Only one shopping day was left before the end of the meetings, but teams often stay past the official close in an effort to finish business. So it appeared again as big names, as usual, began popping up. Cleveland and San Diego reached agreement late Monday night on a deal to send Carter to the Padres, provided they can sign him to a new contract. The conditional deal must be completed by Wednesday or it is automatically off, although the teams can agree to extend the deadine. THE INDIANS would receive highly rated catching prospect Sandy Alomar, Jr. and others, possibly Chris James and talented minor leaguer Carlos Baerga. The clubs said Tuesday that they had agreed on a pool of players to pick a package, and Cleveland gave the Padres permission to negotiate with Carter. Jim Turner, Carter's agent, said he met with Padres manager and vice president Jack McKeon for 1 1/2 hours Tuesday morning, "and we'll meet again in the afternoon. Never did money enter our first conversation. There were other areas we wanted to discuss, and San Diego answered them positively. We will talk about financial terms later in the day." It will likely take a multi-year contract at $3 million per season for San Diego to sign Carter. The Padres, however, went into the deal knowing they would need a lot of money and are almost sure to spend it. "If we get a chance to sit down and neg- otiate, we'll be done without too much delay," McKeon predicted. Carter, 29, hit 35 home runs with 105 RBIs and batted .243 last season. He has averaged 31 homers and 108 RBIs in his last four years. Alomar, 23, drove in 101 runs at Class AAA Las Vegas last season and was the minor league Player-of-the-Year. He has played a few games for the Padres in each of the last two seasons, but has not been able to break into the starting lineup because of All-Star catcher Benito Santiago. ON THE free-agent front, the two main players stayed put. Robin Yount apparently will not make a decision until after the winter meetings as he tried to weigh his loyalty to Milwaukee against new opportunities with the California Angels. Mark Davis, coveted by San Diego and other clubs, seems in no hurry to make up his mind. Boyd may be ready to accept Montreal's offer of a one-year contract worth $750,000. Gullickson, in Japan for the last two seasons, has a verbal agreement with Houston for a one- year pact worth $1.5 million. Brooks' agent, Richie Bry, was at the winter meetings and planned to meet with a few teams. Brooks is wanted by the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Detroit. Lefferts attended the meetings and attracted immediate interest. San Diego, which is trying to re-sign Davis, wants Lefferts - especially if it trades reliever Greg Harris to Philadelphia. O'Brien has been offered a four-year $7.4 million contract by Detroit. The Chicago White Sox are showing interest while several clubs are after Storm Davis, a 19-game winner with Oakland. In a minor deal, the New York Mets traded pitcher John Mitchell and outfielder Joaquin Contreras to Baltimore for outfielder Keith Hughes and pitcher Cesar Mejia. Mitchell, 23, is 3-8 in brief stints with the Mets. AP To 25... 1,Colorado 11-0-0: 1,492 2. MiamnifR) 10+10 1,407 3. Michigan 10-140 1,374 4 4.
