"What it was was kind of a 'waker-upper'," he said of his team's mere 15-point margin over underdog Akron. 'The team understands they did not play well. But when we came back to practice, they came back ready. . The Wolverines will have to be ready, risking a 3-0 record against their toughest opponent of the young season. The Broncos, off to a 1-1 start' have been led by guard Denise Kerby, who is averaging 12.5 points a game, { and center Missy Omara, who has yanked down an average of 16 rebounds per contest. Michigan has been dealt the low hand in a 6-14 series record, and though Western coach Jim Hess denies that his only game versus a Big Ten opponent is bigger than the rest, he won't deny the game's tradition. "We've always had a good rivalry. I don't think it's so much the Big Ten syndrome as it is that they're in-state, and we've played each other every year." As expected, most of Michigan's field goals have rolled off the fingers of, gguard Tempie Brown, who averages 14.7 points per game, and forward Tanya Powell, who averages 12.3 points per contest. Brown also has four 9teals, one assist and nine rebounds to go along with Powell's seven steals, 13 assists and 26 rebounds. In addition to these standouts, Michigan's full court play has utilized *most of the 17 players on the roster. I feel very comfortable with what we're doing full court. It's early, so we're making some mistakes, but it's getting better," VanDeWege said Hess agrees: "Michigan has a pretty balanced attack - they have a good, solid nucleus of about seven or eight people. They're bigger than us inside. Tanya Powell (5-feet-11) is as good a player as we play against, and there's . (Carol) Szczechowski, too (5-feet-10)." Michigan forward Sean Higgins guc CCHA standings and statistics Michigan basketball coach Steve Fisher is treating tonight's game against Central Michigan (7:30 p.m., Crisler Arena) with the same caution all coaches afford lesser teams. "You've always got a chance," Fisher said. "They'll be a good MAC team. Lesser teams than them have beaten better teams than us." But CMU coach Charlie Coles is not overcome with enthusiasm at the chance to bump off the defending national champs. "Would I be excited if you threw me into a den of lions?" Coles asked. "We get beaten badly every time we go down there. I don't think we need that right now. We're 1-3. "I didn't schedule them, I'm not the athletic director," Coles added. "If I had the opportunity now, I don't know if I would be playing them." Led by Jeff Majerle, brother of former CMU star and Phoenix Suns forward Dan Majerle, CMU's only win was an 80-78 upset home victory over Wichita State. The 6-foot-8 junior averages over 21 points per game and shoots 62 percent on three pointers. "Majerle's my only consistent scorer but he's not doing well at the defensive end," Coles said. "He's still got a ways on the other parts of his game." Aside from Majerle, Central is inexperienced. Their only other healthy returning player from last season's 12-16 team is Carter Briggs, who will 4 not start tonight, according to Coles. The majority of CMU's players are either first year players or from the junior college ranks. Of the frosh, center-forward Dennis Kahn is the most prominent. Recruited by Michigan, Kahn scores eight points and grabs five rebo~unds per game. "Kahn is great. He's been playing great. Great vertical - over 40 inches. He's got 'Michigan' talent," Coles said. "He's a country boy, he still needs experience, but he'll be good." t, E rk A -Standings TEAM (OVERALL) W L I Lake Superior (14-2-0) 12 2 0 Michigan St. (13-3-0) 12 2 0 Michigan (10-5-1) 8 5 1 Bowling Green (9-7-0) 8 6 0 W.
