ARTS The Michigan Daily The Wednesday, December 6, 1989 Breadshop rises to the occasion BY JAY PEKALA The Brecht Company's production of The Breadshop is characteristic Brecht from start to finish: from the stark white light and the expressionistic pale faces with sunken cheeks and darkened eyes, to the scene titles painted on gliding banners. The scenery is minimal. A flat depicts the breadshop; an- other creates a newsstand. Two raised win- dows flank either side of the stage, and some crates and trash cans balance the bare stage picture. The Residential College Auditorium is an intimate venue for this recently trans- lated "lost play." The play itself is by no means one of Brecht's more accomplished works, right- fully so since it was left as a fragment that was then reconstructed by members of the Berliner Ensemble in 1967. The script draws some interesting characters and presents a tale that wants to involve the audience emo- tionally, but in Brechtian fashion, it never allows one that sympathetic release. The main figure is a meek, young widow named Niobe Queck (pronounced "kvek" and played by Ann Shanahan) who suffers the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. She is evicted from her apartment, dispossessed of her furniture, forced into prostitution to feed her family, then separated from her children, and "redeemed" in death. The reason for her avalanche of misfor- tunes, if one goes to the root of the inci- dents, is her obedience. Working for a ruth- less, greedy bread baker (a shifty Martin Sweeney), she follows his orders to purchase firewood and then supports him, after he de- cides he cannot afford the wood, in telling the wood dealer that he did not order it. Since her name is on the order, she is left with the wood and no way to pay for it. Thus begins her pitiful downfall. Surrounding the action is a chorus of im- poverished indigents, looking like the chorus of Les Miserables in brighter lighting and having a more pedantic political agenda. After beginning the show by confronting the audience, who they claim "have just come back from eating," and all but blaming them for the plight of the poor, starving class, the group functions like a Greek chorus. They break into scenes to comment to the charac- ters or to point out something for the audi- ence. Basically, as Brecht would have it, they spoon feck their opinion to the audi- ence. Like other Brecht, this is fine, but there is never a proposed solution, only the exposure of the disease, which is not made entirely clear. In The Breadshop, the source of the problem cannot be satisfactorily located. Ev- eryone is at fault. The conniving breadbaker, Mr. Meininger, is wrong, Mrs. Queck has lied, the real estate agent is capitalistic, the newspaper boy who tries to help Queck is naive, and the Salvation Army Lieutenant is an idealist for believing that religious conso- lation is more important than food. There are too many legs on this table to allow it to stand up straight. In contrast to Brecht's jumbled play, the entire cast of The Breadshop, under transla- tor/director Martin W. Walsh, enlivens the various episodes with focused energy. Ann See BREADSHOP, p. 9 CLASSIFIED ADS 764-0557 GOING PLACES $99 ANYWh ER E IN THE USA ON NORTHWEST airlines!
