Davis had yet to impress her critics in her four-year tenure, compiling a 50-83 overall record, marred by two back-to-back 1-17 Big Ten seasons. The Michigan athletic department likes winners, and from what Davis displayed as the Wolverine coach, she is not a winner. Speculation that she would be fired persisted for much of the season, perhaps leading one to believe that if she did not resign, she would have been given her pink slip nonetheless. Iowa volleyball coach Ruth Nelson and Minnesota coach Stephanie Schleuder both confirmed that word of the head coaching job opening at Michigan reached them in yesterday's mail, which means that the announcement must have been made public to other coaches before Davis officially resigned. Obviously the athletic department knew about Davis' decision well before the announcement. Regardless, Michigan needs to improve its volleyball program, and with a new coach on the way, the athletic department has ample opportunity to ,do so. The players showed a great deal of potential this past season, illustrating that they do not deserve most of the blame for the dismal season. Davis herself must shoulder much of the blame. Throughout the season, Davis coached from a distance, attending the by Matt Rennie Daily Sports Writer The Wolverine wrestling team finished sixth this weekend at the highly competitive Las Vegas classic. Arizona State took the honors in a field that featured six of the top nine ranked teams in the country. Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Indiana, and Iowa State rounded out the top five. Although no Wolverine won his weight class, two of them finished second in their respective weight classes: Fritz Lehrke at 190 pounds, and Sam Amine at 158. Lehrke's victory was particularly impressive because he defeated Oklahoma's Joe Stafford, the top seed, in the semifinals. "That was a tremendous win for him," said Michigan head coach Dale Bahr. "Fritz did a real fine job for us." Lehrke, a junior in eligibility, dropped the final match to Lehigh's Matt Ruppel, who is ranked third nationally. Lehrke suffered a cut to his right eyeball in the match with Stafford, which may have been a Joyce Davis resigned as head coach of the Michigan volleyball team yesterday. games in body only. On the one occasion that she actively directed the Wolverines, they upset first-place Minnesota for their sole conference victory. A serious liability to the volleyball program had always been its lack of scholarships. However, this year Davis possessed twelve full scholarships to work with. But the team continued to struggle. Davis may not have been a poor coach, as evidenced by the Minnesota victory, but she certainly proved to be a poor leader. Davis failed a coach, but perhaps future teams will show that she did indeed accomplish something while she headed the program. factor in the final. "I thought I could beat him," said Lehrke. "I hung with him, but I just slipped a little toward the end." Amine, another redshirt junior who is ranked twelfth in the country, continued to build an impressive record. He beat Wade Zimmerman of Fresno State, the nation's second- best wrestler at 158, on his way to the runner-up spot. "Sam has become one of our most consistent winners, Bahr said. Amine's run at the championship was stopped by Steve Hamilton of Iowa State, third in the country and the tourney's second seed. Despite these fine performances, Bahr was most pleased with the third-place finish of heavyweight Phil Tomek. Tomek, a sophomore, was victorious over Oklahoma State's Kirk Mammen, who holds the number three spot in the land, thus winning the consolation final. "I'm really pleased with Phl, Bahr said. "He wrestled with more confidence. He made the jump this weekend into being a great wrestler." Hair Styling with a Flair - 7 Barber Stylists for MEN & WOMEN " NO WAITING!
