Women golfers take fourth at OSU tourney The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 17, 1989-- Page 15- fit. b ;., BY THEODORE COX The women's golf team has been blaming their poor play on the weather the last few tournaments. And last weekend they proved their point. The conditions at the Ohio State Invitational were superb as Michigan finished in fourth place out of a field of nine schools in Columbus. Coach Sue LeClair couldn't contain her excitement over the squad's play. "We had a great tournament," said LeClair. "This is the best we've ever done." The host, Ohio State, won the tournament with an overall score of F91. Michigan ended up with a total of 949, just behind Big Ten rival Wisconsin, 934. The Wolverines squeaked by Purdue, 952, after trailing them by eight strokes before Sunday's final round of play. The most impressive result for the Wolverines was their low average of 79 strokes per round. "I just like all these nice scores under 80, that's what I like," said LeClair. Erica Zonder led the team with scores of 81, 72 and 79. Those rounds placed her, unofficially, eighth overall in individual play. The remaining members Becky Hayes (78-78-79), Darcy Chandler (79-83-79) and Jenny Boring (82-79- 81) rounded out the Wolverine scoring over the three rounds. What was the key to Michigan's sudden turn around? According to LeClair it was "sunshine, warm weather, and determination." Although the team has improved, a lot of work lies ahead for the Wolverines to finish respectably in the Big Ten. The weakness in their play at Ohio State was chipping and put- ting. LeClair felt that too many shots were wasted around the green. But the problem is that the squad hasn't had the time to practice that aspect of their game lately. "As soon as we get through exams, we'll be back working on it," said LeClair. .......a Hoil I' I is or Well it'shfinals and the school time year's i I II r_" .K through, Time to pack up and leave, but before you do You got to find some -p vs I cash to see through June, July, and too. you August 'I .
