Pretty good? All right, a great year - Bill Frieder lives in Arizona now. Joking aside, when you combine a national championship in basket- ball with a Rose Bowl victory in football, it seems as though the un- likely combination of wins would be enough to incite a riot - which it did. The 1988-89 sports season was filled with special moments that will not soon be forgotten. So here it is, all of Michigan .sports - the good, the bad, the ugly - you've got the idea. Best Moment 11:30 p.m. EDT April 3, 1989 Who could ever forget it? If any- one remembers the exact time, more power to them. However, judging from the crowd gathered at Church Street and South University, most people just seemed lucky enough to know and remember that Michigan won. Somewhere in April 3's final hour, Michigan beat Seton Hall for basketball's national championship. Best Athlete Glen Rice Remember way back in Michi- gan's tournament run, down in At- lanta when Michigan battled South Alabama? CBS-TV caught a shot of Athletic Director Bo Schembechler with both hands raised into the air, a huge smile on his face after Rice bombed from three-point range to put Michigan in control. That's Glen Rice. The three-point machine. Most Humble New basketball coach Steve Fisher Last Monday, after being an- nounced as the permanent replace- ment to Bill Frieder, Associated Press writer Harry Atkins approached Fisher and said, "Hi Steve, I'm Harry Atkins from the Associated Press." Fisher replied, "Hi, I'm Steve Fisher." After Fisher first became interim coach, he would begin each press conference by stating, "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Steve Fisher..." And he probably will still be do- ing it next year.
