Consider that last spring the sophomore moved from wide re- ceiver to strong safety. He started. Now he may move to the defensive backfield for next year. Coming out of high school, he was recruited to play baseball by North Carolina. Most Inspirational Talk Bill Frieder After Frieder orphaned his team, he said he wanted to meet with the team before their first game in the NCAA Tournament in Atlanta. One can only imagine what he told them. And taking a line from the movie Knut~e Rockne, All American, he probably said, "Okay boys, go out there and win one for the quitter." Biggest Ending of A Streak The Michigan Wrestling Team The wrestling team handed Iowa coach Dan Gable his first conference loss in 98 consecutive dual meets. Biggest Gag The Michigan Wrestling Team The Wolverines were expected to win the Big Ten title this year but came in a disappointing third as the Iowa Hawkeye's claimed their 16th consecutive conference title. Biggest Gag, Part ii Joe Pantaleo Pantaleo cost the Wolverines second place in the Big Ten wrestling championships with two careless mistakes. First he thought the round was over and let up, and then he misunderstood the criteria for awarding an overtime victory. Best Way to Carry on a Tradition The hockey team's helmets After checking with football coach Bo Schembechler for permis- sion, hockey coach Red Berenson decided to order hockey helmets which resembled the football team's famous-look head gear. The search finally led him to a local car body shop where he had them fine tune the colors. The new helmets, com- plete with maize slashes, debuted during the playoffs. Trio of Swim Champs Ann Colloton, Brent Lang. and Mike Barrowman Three Michigan swimmers won the national championships in their respective catagories. Colloton won the 200 yard-breaststroke, Lang won the 50-yard freestyle and Barrowman took the 200-yard breaststroke. Most Maize-n-Blue Carol Szczechowski This women's basketball player is an all-around star. From her friendly, outgoing personality to her exuberant play on the court, Carol Szezchowski is filled with the Michigan spirit. Best Quote Former Michigan basketball coach Bill Frieder before Michi- gan's first game against Illinois: "Tell (Fighting Illini coach Lou) Henson I'll bet him on the damn game. Tell him to put up or shut up. I'll bet him 500 dollars Illinois wins." Living Colour: On the verge of Gill is the Daily Sports Editor. By Jean-Michel Creviere Keeping an open mind. That's what the band Living Colour is all about. With their recent appearance on Saturday Night Live, coupled with the heavy dose of play on MTV and the popularity of the album, it's not hard to see why Living Colour's debut release jumped from 17 to 12 on Rolling Stone's album chart. Through some stroke of luck, I was able to get an interview with the band's drummer, William Calhoun - which for me is the greatest accomplishment of my life. Back at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, I had the pleasure of playing with Calhoun in the Quincy Jones Orchestra. Even then, people knew he was the best funk drummer at Berklee. It used to pain me that upon graduation from such a reputable school, some guy with an image might make a million bucks, and Calhoun might become another V 61 4 iU /Iiai ----r +Y -11 Lu&&Wl starving But t Berklee, on rehea What? A call from Vernon Reid, band inspirateur, who wanted to know if Calhoun could make a gig that night. What? Learn 12 to 14 songs in an afternoon for a gig that night? Keep an open mind... Seems as though the two knew each other from another encounter, when Calhoun was trying to get his former band "Dark Sarcasm" into the Black Rock Coalition, of which to put the album in the soul or rock section. Let me tell you, the album definitely rocks. From beginning to end, with the exception of a ballad- like intro to "Letter to a Landlord," their third video release, this is hard- edged, all-stops-pulled, non-stop rock and roll. Ed Stasium, album producer, did an excellent job of capturing the emotion and energy of the band. See Living Colour, Page 6 Living Colour breaks musical boundr music.
