coach Bo Schembechler for permis-
sion, hockey coach Red Berenson
decided to order hockey helmets
which resembled the football team's
famous-look head gear. The search
finally led him to a local car body
shop where he had them fine tune
the colors.The new helmets, com-
plete with maize slashes, debuted
during the playoffs.

Three Michigan swimmers won
the national championships in their

respective catagories. Colloton won

Keeping an open mind. That's
what the band Living Colour is all
about.
With their recent appearance on
Saturday Night Live, coupled with
the heavy dose of play on MTV and
the popularity of the album, it's not
hard to see why Living Colour's
debut release jumped from 17 to 12
on Rolling Stone's album chart.
Through some stroke of luck, I
was able to get an interview with the
band's drummer, William Calhoun
- which for me is the greatest
accomplishment of my life. Back at
Berklee College of Music, in
Boston, I had the pleasure of playing
with Calhoun in the Quincy Jones
Orchestra. Even then, people knew
he was the best funk drummer at
Berklee. It used to pain me that upon
graduation from such a reputable
school, some guy with an image
might make a million bucks, and
Calhoun might become another

After the tour with Belafonte,
Calhoun got a call. A call from
Vernon Reid, band inspirateur, who
wanted to know if Calhoun could
make a gig that night. What? Learn
12 to 14 songs in an afternoon for a
gig that night? Keep an open mind...
Seems as though the two knew
each other from another encounter,
when Calhoun was trying to get his
former band "Dark Sarcasm" into the
Black Rock Coalition, of which

definitely rocks. From beginning to
end, with the exception of a ballad-
like intro to "Letter to a Landlord,"
their third video release, this is hard-
edged, all-stops-pulled, non-stop
rock and roll. Ed Stasium, album
producer, did an excellent job of
capturing the emotion and energy of
the band.
