Flannelly is replacing Chris Gagin at shortstop, who is sidelined with a broken hand. BY ADAM BENSON AND LORY KNAPP Junior guard Barb Loeher, a fan favorite for her hard play during the 1988-89 women's basketball season, has had her scholarship revoked so that it can be used by an incoming first-year student. Loeher began her career with the Wolverines as a walk-on, but her hard work and intensity earned her a scholarship for her sophomore year at Michigan. Although she has not seen much playing time during her two years with the Wolverines, she is considered to be an important part of the Michigan team. In fact, the team awarded her the Hustler Award at the end of this season. "(Barb) gave the starting guards competition in practice, she really gave them problems," said grad- uating player Mary Rosowski. "She really helped them prepare for game situations. She knows what to do, she will look to the person who can make the shot and she is great on defense." EVEN THOUGH she had been recognized for her efforts this season, Loeher was not surprised when Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege informed her of his decision. "I was expecting this to happen," said Loeher. "I saw that he had re- cruited six people, putting seventeen people on the team and there was no way we had scholarships for every- body." away." That feeling will affect het impending decision. "He (VanDeWege) told me that he'd love to have me back," Loeher said. "No way is he trying to deter me from playing next year. (But) with six new people and seven guards I would be at the bottom of the list and I'd have to work my way up. It is like a step down from this year. Rosowski said: "I think it's important that people have got to play together - that was something the coach has stressed all season. To bring in six new people seems to be taking the opposite route." Even though she had never had a dramatic increase in her playing time, Loeher was one of two players on the Michigan squad who had a positive turnover/takeaway ratio, something that is critical for a good point guard. "There was nothing negative regarding Barb, (but) we had plans relative to our recruiting that we needed to accomplish," said Van- DeWege. "If I was making the decision emotionally, it would be Barb, but it was a professional one." Michigan Daily SPORTS 763-0376 'Boilers look to BY STEVEN COHEN Michigan baseball coach Bud Middaugh often senses that other teams, particularly non-conference teams, treat a meeting with the Wolverines like it is the World Series. If Middaugh has gotten that impression from the likes of Grand Valley State and Eastern Michigan, he will undoubtedly feel the same when Purdue (19-10, 3- 5 Big Ten) comes to town this weekend for double- headers on Saturday and Sunday. Two weeks ago, Northwestern, which played like Mildcats before facing the Wolverines, battled Mich- igan to four low-scoring defensive games led by great pitching. The Boilermakers, who have gotten outstanding pitching this season, look to have similar low-scoring games this weekend. Purdue, which finished dead last in the conference last season is a team with hopes of making the conference playoffs by finishing in the top r four in the Big Ten. Purdue coach Dave Alexander, who has an 8-30 career record against Michigan, would like to accomplish at least a split this weekend to SAVING play spoilers work toward that end. Michigan (24-8,5-2) has won its past four games and nine of its last 11. Strong pitching and timely hitting has propelled the Wolverines into third place in the conference behind Iowa (5-1) and Illinois (6-2). THROUGHOUT the course of the season, several different players have shone when called upon. For Middaugh, who continually stresses the importance of team play, this has to be pleasing. The Wolverines pitching staff, which ranks among the best in the Big Ten, will face an equally imposing Boilermaker staff. Purdue, despite losing best pitcher Pete Altenberger for the weekend, expects to contain the Wolverines in Fisher Stadium, known as a pitchers park. Last sea- son, Michigan won all four games at West Lafayette, where the ball travels a lot better. Lefthander John Carrico leads Purdue hurlers with a 6-0 mark, and 47 strikeouts in 47 innings. Sophomore outfielder Dave Scheitlin, hitting ,351, and senior slugger Mike Galle have paced Purdue to a .287 team batting average. Loeher VanDeWege added: "We had to be realistic and we had the opportunity to bring in some outstanding fresh- men." VanDeWege also said that there was an understanding when Loeher received the scholarship that it might not be renewed the following year. Loeher said: "I've always known in that back of my mind that (losing the scholarship) was a possiblity. But I felt that it might depend on my performance, and I felt that I performed well this year. That is why, although I was forewarned, I was very disappointed that he took it The Universityof Michigan f ice or Aid s 2011 Student Activities Building FALL & WINTER 1989-90 APPLICATION DEADLINE MONDAY, APRIL 17, 1989 To ensure priority consideration for financial aid* for the coming school year, continuing students must submit complete application materials by the priority deadline.
