ARTS The Michigan Daily Thursday, April 13, 1989 Page 7 'Celibidache trades fame for BY TONY SiLBER genuine because he strives for artistic integrity. He was appointed Music Director of the Munich Philhar- monic Orchestra in 1979. Before that, he was the Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Why roll? No one, and he's not offering his services any- way. While standard orchestras tour for up to six months with 50-plus dates, Celibidache is now in the midst of his premiere tour of North America: three WHAT makes a conductor great? Consider two examples, Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache. Bernstein is perhaps the most famous conductor in the world. He has toured the world with the most noted ensembles for over 50 years. He has recorded more ex- tensively than any other modern-day conductor and re- cieved multi-million dollar recording contracts. He has composed many pieces himself and is widely sought after by conservatories and other musical institutions. Celibidache's story is vastly different. Although he has conducted for over 50 years as well, he has con- ducted with only two major orchestras during his entire career. He doesn't tour that often. He has never Irecorded. He hasn't won the awards Bernstein has. Hardly a tool of public relations, he is a recluse, a fol- lower of Zen Buddhism. He sneers at Bernstein and others like him. He refuses to make classical music an industry in which Bernstein is the chairperson. Which conductor is great? They both are, but Celi- bidache's greatness is much richer and perhaps more (Sergiu Celibidache) doesn't tour that often. He has never recorded. He hasn't won the awards Bernstein has. Hardly a tool of public relations, he is a recluse, a fol- lower of Zen Buddhism. He sneers at Bernstein and others like him. He refuses to make classical music an industry in which Bernstein is the chairperson. integrity Out every time the group plays and many people are turned away for lack of tickets. Sounds like Joe Louis Arena for Red Wing games. Ernest Fontheim, a research physicist in the Engi- neering College, first saw Celibidache in post-war Berlin. "For me personally, each concert was like a cultural liberation," he said. "I like Celibidache's style, which was very vivacious and energetic. Now, 42 years later, almost to the day, I look forward to see him conduct again - this time in Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor." For most of us, this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see and hear the music of the Munich Philharmonic under Celibidache's baton. It will also be an opportunity to see conducting greatness in ac- tion. Who needs Bernstein? THlE MUNICH PHIILH'ARMONIC will perform Bruckner's Fourth Symphony tonight at 8 p.m. at lull Auditorium. He works his Munich players to the bone. He plays what he wants. He doesn't want recording companies telling him what to play. Who wants this type of conductor on the pay- weeks, 14 engagements, and that's big for them. As a result, the Munich Philharmonic has devel- oped a mystique. Since they don't record, you practi- cally can't hear them unless you see them live or get your hands on a pirated recording.
