The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 10, 1989-Page 7 Undercover reporter describes lax security at London airport LONDON (AP) - British Transport Secretary Paul Channon yesterday ordered an urgent inquiry into a newspaper's claim of security lapses on Pan Am airliners at London's Heathrow airport, his office said. "The Secretary has ordered an inquiry. He has asked for an urgent report from Pan Am on the matter," said a department spokesman who spoke on condition of anonymity. Monday's editions of The Sun tabloid carried an account by a reporter who said he worked undercover for two weeks in a bag- gage handling job at Pan Am and noted re- peated security breaches. The reporter, George Pascoe-Watson, applied for the job using the fictitious name George Watson two weeks after 270 people died in the Dec. 21 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. He was hired three months later even though he lied about previous jobs and gave the names of two friends as sponsors, he said. Pascoe-Watson said that on one occasion more than 50 pieces of luggage for Flight 103 to New York passes through an X-ray scanner, but the Pan Am security guard glanced at the video screen only seven times. He also said he was allowed to wander unsupervised through restricted areas at Heathrow despite security rules. "Just hours after starting work on my first day I was left unsupervised and unchecked to pack the Israeli soccer team's luggage on to a Qantas 747 bound for Melbourne," Pascoe-Watson said. Pan Am denied the charge that the re- porter was unsupervised. Peter Joel, the airline's spokesman in London, said: "We believe it is premature for the Department of Transport to accept that a breach of security has occurred based solely on the allegations of The Sun and before investigations are completed." After the Lockerbie crash, reporters from three British newspapers described how they were allowed to wander through the airport and board airliners unchallenged.
