With Ralph in jail, Scott begins a. relationship with Ralph's sister, Beth (Winona Ryder) - another conflict. Scott's parents are involved in another meaningless conflict. There is too much here for an audience to digest- The acting is basically strong, however, with Kiefer Sutherland be- ing particularly impressive. He is human throughout, never too much, never not enough. Downey is more problematic. His character is poorly written into the story and so his act- ing abilities are shrouded. He goes on an acid trip at his sister's high school graduation, takes off his clothes, and goes on a rampage through the gymnasium. Is this comedy or tragedy? No one is sure. The music may be reason enough for a look at 1969. It abounds with Pelle Continued from Page 5 demanding money for the owner's bastard son; and there is that son who befriends Pelle and actually achieves some happiness after he runs away and joins a travelling show. The movie belongs just as much to these characters as to Pelle and his father, and the glimpses of their lives raise the movie to a grand height. Bille August's directing of all these characters is superb. With the strong cast he is given, he makes excellent use of close-ups to show a character's emotions and puts the movie on a small, personal level. Just as impressive, however, are his wide-open shots of the Danish countryside, so beautiful and rich some classic tunes from the era. We're treated to selections by Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Re- vival, the Youngbloods, Cream, the Zombies, and the Moody Blues. 1969 can be seen as a film about a couple of guys who decide to be hippies for a summer, but it should be seen as more. It is a realistic por- trait of an era of indecision where the youth of the nation used the Viet- nam War as a tool to vent their frustrations against an ignorant gov- ernment. Scott, at first, decides to escape the draft by running away to Canada. Later he accepts that he must stay and protest. That is the main theme of the film, and through all the confusing conflicts and '60s clich6s, that time warp sensation comes through and gives us a taste of life... then. 1969 is now showing at Briar- wood and Showcase Cinemas. that it seems they could only exist as paintings in an art gallery, with just a perceptible character running across their canvasses. Life in the 19th century is realistically portrayed in Pelle the Conqueror - not as an easy life of horse-drawn carriages, but a life of dirt and work and survival. There is very little reward for the beating their lives take and, more often than not, attempts to make life more bearable lead to despair. The movie is ultimately optimistic, though, for there is hope with Pelle. Although he is just a boy, he has learned that if he is to escape his father's fate he must fight for everything, and we are confident that he will not be defeated.
