ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, April 5, 1989 Page 9 R.E.M. finds Green-er pastures BY MARK SWARTZ IF U2 has taken on the respons- iblity of being Our Beatles, Our Dylan, and Our Hendrix, and INXS has somehow won the the designa- tion of this year's Stones, then R.E.M. is left with the compara- tively meager task of filling the Who's shoes. True, Peter Buck never had the bad taste - or the chutzpah - to demolish his guitar onstage (though he is, in fact, tall, has a big nose, and plays a Rickenbacker). And Michael Stipe's marblemouthed pronunciations and Daltrey's "We Won't Get Fooled Again" holler are as far apart as two vocalizations can be. But R.E.M., like the Who for most of their existence, has proven to be a consistently inventive, intelligent, and comfortably unrevo- lutionary band that has built up a See R.E.M., Page 10 HI E P WANTE COUNSELORS For boys' camp in Maine. Yes, there really are tye-died, smiling, long-haired, time trippers in VW buses, who don't worry about little details such as where to sleep and how-will-we-get-home-if-we-spend-any-more-money. Yes, a lot of people who don't think peace, love, and understanding are very funny will arrive here in Michigan's official '60s culture appreciation center. Yes, they are the band that allows their fans to tape each concert. Yes, the band really has been playing since way back then. Laugh all you want - but a lot of people will still have a really good time the next few days. While many elements of the "Grateful Dead Experience" have become ingrained over all those years, some notable changes have occured in the latter half of the '80s. Nothing has caused more gabbing than the Dead's first Top 10 hit, 1987's "Touch of Grey." Suddenly, the general population was reminded that the Dead were still around, touring their butts off. Suddenly, the Dead had a major influx of new fans. Not all of the old fans dug this - hipsters can never tolerate people who discover hip things after they do. In the curre.nt Cur- rent, one Head even claims they haven't done any- thing good since their first album. But the scene con- tinued in 1988 as it has since the Age of Aquarius, al- album in roughly seven years, the big question was how long until the next one. The news from the '88 shows, then, was the debut of new songs, including "Victim or the Crime" and "Foolish Heart." More de- buts came last February during a run of shows in Los Angeles. Rumors that Brent (Deadheads always refer to the 'boys' by their first names) was leaving the band were squashed with his new song, tentatively titled by Heads "We Can Run, We Can't Hide." Jerry also brought out a new one, "Standing On The Moon." Both songs have a new (for the Dead at least) sub- ject: politics, specifically as they relate to the envi- ronment. Last fall, the Dead announced they were fi- nally throwing their significant publicity weight be- hind a cause at a press conference held with Greenpeace and the Rainforest Action Network at the United Na- tions. Of the band's involvement, Garcia said "It seems pathetic that it has to be us, but since no one else is doing anything about it, we don't really have any choice." He later told High Times magazine "This is an earth problem - the whole earth. It's definitely life threatening." The band backed up their words with a sold-out benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, but they re- ally benefit the rainforest issue by talking about it. After the Dead announced their involvement, major rock magazines picked up the story; when you have a chance to talk to a member of the Grateful Dead, well, doing an environmental article doesn't seem so boring: Bob Weir even showed up on Nickelodeon discussing. beit slightly bigger.
