The Mighigan Daily - Monday, April 3, 1989 - Page 11 Not just a basketball weekend Swimmers take 3rd at NCAA BY ANDREW GOTTESMAN Olympic swimmer Brent Lang won his second national championship and Mike Barrowman his first in leading the Wolverines to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships last weekend. Michigan, which came in fifth last season, finished with 315 team points, behind Texas (475), and Stanford (396). The Wolverines barely edged out UCLA by 1.5 points in recording their best finish since 1966. "The goal was to move up one or two spots," Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek said. "That is exactly what we did, from fifth to third." Lang won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.68 seconds, edging out Texas' Sean Jordan by three one-hundredths of a second. Lang also set a Big Ten record of 19.50 in a preliminary race. "I wanted to get the team on a roll," he said. "My win added some excitement to the team." Lang, however, ran into some trouble in the 100-freestyle when he was disqualified for a false start. "He accepted it as a man," Urbanchek said. "It made him that much more determined to prove he was the fastest swimmer in the country." Which is exactly what Lang did in the last event of the meet, the 400- freestyle relay, to clinch third for Michigan. After Texas edged out UCLA by .3 seconds for the win, the Wolverines needed at least a seventh place finish in order to get third overall. Lang, anchoring the relay, brought Michigan that seventh-place time. ' Barrowman's title came in the 200-breaststroke. His 1:55.72 finish was also a Big Ten record. "I was worried after the prelims this morning," Barrowman said. "I don't think I've ever been in such a physically demanding meet and because of that I was worried about how fast I'd be able to go in the final." * Barrowman also came in second in the 100-breaststroke, finishing in 54.27 seconds. Michigan's other individual second place finisher was Eric Namesnik in the 400-individual medley. he Wolverine divers played an integral role in the overall finish, scoring 58 points for Michigan. Senior co-captain Lee Michaud place fourth in both the 1 and 3-meter springboard events. Junior Bill Hayes also finshed fourth, on the platform. "The divers came through as always," Urbanchek said. Overall, Michigan totaled 11 All-Americans, which is awarded for a top- eight finish. In addition to Lang, Barrowman, Michaud, Hayes and Namesnik, Alex Alvizuri, Marty Moran, Eric Wunderlich, Greg Varner, Mick Wilkening and Eric Bailey won the honor. Baseball team wins 3 out of 4 BY STEVEN COHEN As the Michigan baseball team prepared to open its Big Ten season against Northwestern, 6-16-1, the squad couldn't help but notice the Wild- cats' horrendous pitching. The lowest ERA compiled by a Northwestern starter was 7.14. Last weekend, Michigan, 16-7, won three of four games against a greatly improved Wildcat pitching staff, which bore little resemblance to the team that had walked 135 batters in 133 innings. The teams split on Saturday, with the Wolverines winning the first game 2-0, and losing the second contest 2-1, in nine innings. On Sunday, Michigan took two, 2-1 and 4-3. "It was a real tough series, both teams played well," Michigan third baseman Doug Kaiser said. "I think it will be like this all year in the Big Ten. The competition will be good throughout the league." Added leftfielder Jim Durham: "I think as a team we didn't hit real well, but good pitching and defense kept us in the games." "Good pitching" is putting it mildly. Lefthander Ross Powell(2-0) struck out eight and allowed only one hit to win Saturday's first game. Righthander Tim Lata pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits, in a losing effort in the nightcap. Lata's ERA now stands at a miniscule 0.69. On Sunday Mike Grimes (3-1) started Michigan off with a one-hitter. In the next contest, Jeff Tandery's pitched six scoreless innings before con- ceding three runs in the sixth. Russ Brock earned his first save of the season. Kourtney Thompson, who won Sunday's first game with a pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh, shined offensively, as did Greg McMurtry, and Phil Price. McMurtry hit the ball with authority all weekend, but only had a 3-for- 10 showing. "You're not going to see the ball hit any harder than McMurtry hit it today," Northwestern coach Paul Stevens said Saturday. Price, upset over his 1-for-6 performance on Saturday, spent an extra hour after the game in the batting cage. Evidently it helped, as Price went 2- for-3 in both games on Sunday. Price moved up to fourth on Michigan's career doubles list with his double in the first game. Third baseman Tim Flannely, despite going hitless, stood out defensively, as did speedy leftfielder Durham, second baseman Matt Morse, and shortstop Dave Everly, who started in place of the injured Chris Gagin. Hey Mate, nice stuff Seton Hall coach P.J. Carlesimo hugs forward Andrew Gaze, who scored 20 paints in the Pirates' 95-78 win over Duke to launch the Hall into the championship game against Michigan.
