The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 3, 1989-- Page 5 Melee Continued from Page 1 over an hour to pull down the stop- light hanging in the intersection. At times they used a crutch and a rope to grab onto the light. They failed in trying to pull it down, but the frame was broken. Crowds, who earlier in the evening cheered, "We're number one" and "Seton Hall sucks," screamed each time someone grabbed onto the stoplight, and ran to the sides of the street when the light bobbed up and down. By yesterday morning, most of the garbage had been removed, al- though some glass and other refuse ;remained on the streets and in door- ways. The newspaper boxes were re- placed, and no visible damage was done to any storefronts, even though people had been crawling on awnings and rooftops for much of the previous evening. In Seattle, Higgins responded to reports of the melee: "Halfway through the season, I had doubts about our fans," he said. "Next season will bea lot harder on them because we know they have the potential to get excited." Psychology Prof. Melvin Manis offered several possible reasons as to why the riot occurred. One is that many people had too much to drink, because alcohol "often tends to make people less inhibited." Another possibility is that many people got caught up in the excitement of the basketball team winning such a big game and were expressing a form of pride. This idea, Manis said, is called "basking in reflected glory." A different theory is that people got caught up in the excitement of the victory, and in the crowd setting, people behaved abnormally because they thought they could get away with it easier, Manis said. Daily staff writer Steve Blonder contributed to this story. Daily Continued from Page 1 protest by various Jewish students on February 21, who charged the paper with anti-Semitism. However, in a statement to the Daily, five Jewish organizations condemed the incident. "This crimi- nal act is a step backward for stop- ping anti-Semitism and all other forms of racism and discrimination," the statement read. Upon hearing of the incident last night, Provost Charles Vest ex- pressed feelings of shock and dis- tress. "This is first and foremost a police matter," he said. Vice Provost for Minority Affairs Charles Moody said last night he would be dicussing the incident with Vest to decide what sort of action the administration would take. "These kinds of incidents are disturbing to everyone. This is not the kind of atmosphere we're trying to develop on campus," he said. In a separate incident late Satur- day night, a rock was hurled through a window on the West side of the building. "This is not a way to conduct a civilized discussion," said Elliot Appel, co-chair of the Progressive Zionist Caucus, one of the groups which signed the statement. "It could be that there is a silent JDL (Jewish Defense League) contingent on cam- pus, but it could also be one person taking on the role of vigilante for the Jewish community." LSA senior Brad Kurtzberg, an organizer of the February protest, said, "This is a deplorable act of cowardice which is contrary to what the protest and its organizers stand for. Daily editors met Friday night and released the following statement: "The Daily will respond to public concerns about our coverage in let- ters to the editor or through dia- logue, but we do not find attacks on our building a legitimate way fo voice objections to our coverage." 9j The Calendar of The University of Michigan The calendar combines meeting, lecture, workshop, and conference announcements with other events happening each week on campus.
