Anxious for the world to travel with them, John, Paul, George, and Ringo recorded their psychedelic trip in a feature length animated film, Yellow Submarine. The acclaimed "four star" cartoon surfaces in Ann Arbor this Sunday. The groundbreaking group, whose music spanned much of their careers, blended together a humor and style all their own and developed an hallucinogenic recipe to satisfy any appetite. Yellow Submarine is a fun- filled tale of the "Fab Four's" mis- sion to save the world from the Blue Meanies - a serious problem in- deed. The solution the Boys from Liverpool come up with, although obvious, is too often missed by us all. The Beatles used their own voices over their animated selves in surely the first and possibly the finest full length music video. Filled with Beatles' songs such as "Nowhere Man," "When I'm Sixty Four," and "All You Need is Love," the group's journey has become a timeless clas- sic. The Student Film Appreciation Organization is dedicated to bringing classic films back to the big screen and raising money and food for Ann Arbor's homeless. Sunday night they offer a rare treat to our Michi- gan campus with a screening of Yel- low Submarine to promote fun and awareness. So share "A Day in the Life" with The Beatles defeating the Blue Meanies and help the homeless with your participation. Yellow Submarine will be at An- gell Hall Auditorium A for only one night, Sunday April 2. Showtimes are at 5:00, 7:00 & 9:00. Tickets for everyone are only $2.50 with a can of food donation and $3.50 without. A new Lou Reed: H wealthy, and wise By Greg Baise Remember when Lou Reed was sick? 1 i Everything you've always wanted to know about living and working in New York City... but were Reed Continued from page 5 are no musical thrills. Most of the time the music sounds like Trans- former without any of the cabaret stylings. That is to say, rock and roll without any tubas. At other times the music of the Velvet Underground seeps through in the basic arrangements characteristic of the third Velvets album. The per- cussive genius of Maureen "Moe" Tucker, the drummer for the Velvet Underground, expresses itself on two tracks. Also Rob Wasserman emu- lates the buzzing viola of John Cale on "Dime Store Mystery," a song inspired by the funeral of Velvet Underground patron Andy Warhol, as well as by Martin Scorsese's defense of The Last Temptation of Christ. The lyrical inspiration, however, constantly dominates the album: much of the emphasis here is on the words, with Reed's vocals way up too embarrassed to askll' -U1 I I Fun! Food! Beverages! In fact, Reed says in his liner notes that this album is "meant to be listened to in one 58 minute sit- ting as though it were a book or a movie." Live, Lou Reed always delivers a variety of songs spanning his entire catalogue. With this tour, material stretches from the Velvet days to the ever-so-current present day of New York. Live shows have been docu- mented on vinyl since the Velvet Underground, when Live at Max's Kansas City became the first bootleg ever released by a major recording label. Since then another live Vel- vets album has been released, as well as several live albums from his solo career of the 1970s and 1980s. With the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed made rock and roll history. With New York, Reed delivers his observations and scathing criticisms of contemporary history. No more romanticization of sex and drugs: "I've stopped, you shouldn't start," as he once said. Many times, Reed has appeared to be the next Rock ca- sualty. However, Lou Reed is now healthy. To survive in New York, one has to be. Lou Reed and the Feelies will perform at the Fox Saturday night. (Ta "- I The tales of utter decadence writ- ten by Reed inspired his legendary. champion, Lester Bangs, to coin ev- erybody's favorite summation of Lou's career: "Lou Reed is my own hero principally because he stands for all the most fucked up things that I could ever possibly conceive of. Which probably only shows the limits of my imagination." A summation that perhaps held true, but now things have changed. Lou is still sick - but he's sick of you. You, Mssrs. Waldheim, Jack- son, Downey, North, and, of course, Mr. Mayor. This is New York, sung by Lou Reed, 1989. A New York with a busload of problems, symbolized by the Statue of Bigotry that overshad- ows the victims. Reed brings his aural impressions of New York and the macrocosm that it represents to Detroit on Saturday. Reed has been singing about the decadent side of life in New York City for 25 years, beginning in the Velvet Underground, one of the most influential rock groups ever. The Velvet Underground broke all of the taboos; they were the first explicit synthesis of bizarre sex, massive amounts of drugs (with all of the obligatory religious imagery associ- ated therein), and experimental, on- the-edge rock and roll, plus some doo-wop showingsReed's love for music. Reed orchestrated the white noise that became a celebration of the wild side: the junkies, the hook- ers, the idle rich, the deviant fringes of New York. That subject matter persists to this day, except now Reed is upset and is ready to take (musical) action to notify the general masses about these social wrongs. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Reed explained that a major impetus for the creation of the new album was "a mean spir- ited government that is essentially attacking people that can't defend themselves. That's the weakest peo- ple - the kids, the sick, the elderly. And I think we should fight back." Reed began fighting back in 1985, when he participated in the Farm year City' perfc term Rolli ing a over.
