ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 29, 1989 Page 7 Don't expect surprises this year BY THE FILM STAFF TO some people, Oscar is Felix's other half in The Odd Couple, and to some he is the Grouch of Sesame r Street fame. But to most, Oscar is a gold statuette. However, this once noble award has turned into little more than the equal of the People's Choice Awards, and thus little mod- els of green puppets in garbage cans would be just as appropriate. By now, you've probably heard everything about all the nominated films, you probably have your own predictions, and you're probably right. This year the old ad slogan for Morton Salt is applicable: "When it rains, it pours." Rain Man will surely take the top three awards for which it is nominated - Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor. Says Daily film reviewer Tony Silber: "The film is dynamic in its genuine human sensitivity as well as in its engineering of a very demanding story. Levinson is truly a character's director and his treatment of this story countered with Hoffman's Oscars Whose opinion do they represent? Them Oscars ain't no place fer folks like us BY JOHN SHEA HOLLYWOOD - Me and Jed is sittin' in a bush, waitin' for Eddie. "Is he coming?" Jed says. "Shut up," I say. "Dang, he was funny in Coming to America," Jed says. "'Member that Frances McDormand, above left with Gene Hackman in Mississippi Burning, her Oscar nomination in an interview on page 8. Burning will probably lose the Man, whose star Dustin Hoffman, above right, is the favorite to win Best Actor. comments on the film and Best Picture Oscar to Rain scene where he and the other guy makes buggy-eyes and starts swear- ing like crazy? Dang, they's comic geniuses, them two. They-" Jed is so stoopid. He just don't get it, so I have to smack him upside the head to explain. We quit our jobs at the beet factory in Duanesberg and hitchhiked all this way out West just for this one night and Jed decides to ruin it by yakking up a storm. Lemme explain this to you in more gentler terms: tonight is Oscar night. Now, Jed and me, we love the movies -- but we ain't too big on being educated none. I reckon if we wanted to be educated, we wouldn't have dropped out of school in the seventh grade. But that's another story. The important thing here is, we go to the movies to have a good time. The beet factory has a way of takin' a toll on a man, and when he comes home and wraps his arms around his woman and says, "Honey, let's go see a movie tonight," he doesn't wanna see Out of Ass Africa, OK? He wants a little action, a little humor, a little comedy. Ya know? And these Oscar deals? They're supposed to have the "best" of everything? Best Actor, Best Movie, so on. Well, every year Jed and me watch the Oscar show on T.V. and every year it's the same damn thing. Actors who we never seen and titles we can't pronounce win all these deals, every damn time. Jed's girl- friend Charlene, who fancies herself as a movie expert and reads all those magazines, says it's because the Os- car people got a 20-foot-long stick shoved up their butt that they been havin' a might hard time gettin' out. But these movie experts on T.V., they say the Oscar people are becoming less uptight. That people are gettin' recognized by the Oscar people who I'd recognize. I watch the Oscars last year and, yep, it's done dang true. I saw Mama from Throw Mama from the Train and I saw Mork from Mork and Mindy. They didn't win nothin', but at least they got to come to the party. So Jed and me got to thinkin', "Let's go out there and see our fa- vorite stars up close and personal like instead of on T.V." We hitched to See Me & Jed, Page 8 SEEKING: non-smoking male students for newly remodeled, furnished house. Parking, laundry available. Sept.-Sept. Lease $190/month + elec. Call JP764-0831.
