ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 22, 1989 Page 7 Chances:. Return of the return movie /Y BRENT EDWARDS Chances Are sets up an interest- ing situation: a 22-year-old discovers that he is the reincarnation of the husband of his new girlfriend's nother. What should he do? Should he re-marry the mother because he still has the memories of their mar- riage together, or should he realize that he's had 22 years as a new per- son and has no more claim as her husband? Or should he just take his reincarnation story to Geraldo and make big bucks on the sleazy talk show circuit (not an option consid- ered in the movie)? Philisophical ideas aside, Chances Are has both comic and romantic .,possibilities. Cybill Shepherd plays the mother who hasn't been able to accept the death of her husband for 23 years. Robert Downey, Jr.'s real- ization that he's Shepherd's late husband provides some amusing Meat the Lounge Cats Band hopes to make the (USDA) grade Alex Finch (Robert Downey, Jr.) dances with ever-present character actor Fran Ryan in Chances Are, another stuck-in-a-strange-time-and- barely-escape-incest movie. BY JIM PONIEWOZIK R EHEARSAL'S running a little late for Capt'n Dave and The Psychedelic Lounge Cats. As I walk up to their attic/practice space, only two Cats are there, staring at each other with guitars in hand. "Show me how that Bread tune goes again," says one. My ears prick up. This is the bizarre band I've heard about? The same band that got kicked out of Rick's for a stage show that included home movies and dancers wearing scanty outfits made of food? Covering a Bread song? As in "David Gates and"? "Yeah, we're doing 'Make it With You,"' says lead guitarist Dave Murray, after jinging out a few chords for rhythm guitarist Mike Joffe's benefit. "We're try- ing to start a Bread revival. We want lots of Breadheads following us...." Any other covers? Yes, he says, they also cover "Barbecue Pope." As in the Butthole Surfers. As in nothing whatsoever to do with David Gates and Co. But it's a lounge version, he says. This is obviously no ordinary band we're dealing with here. As we should find out when they start playing. Practice was supposed to start about a half hour ago, but there's a little delay because they're waiting for their newest member to show up for his first performance with the band. A... um... conga player. But they should be here. Any... minute... ...ahem... - well, look, while we're waiting, let me tell you a little bit about the band. Having played at parties around campus since last spring, the band made their biggest splash in a January show they didn't play; or didn'tfinish playing, anyway. The concert, part of a Lambda Chi charity friends party, was cut short after about half an hour. Appar- ently the management didn't cotton to the idea of the Cats' visually arresting live show. Something about pornography laws. The band left with a newfound no- toriety and a heightened awareness of the Rick's dress code: Letter sweatshirts si, g-strings made of turkey, breasts and creamed corn, no. The band, with strong roots in '70s music (Parliament, Bread) and '70s television (The Love Boat lends its name to one of their songs, Fantasy Island's Mr. Roark and Erik Estrada appear in another) is made up of seven members: Murray; Joffe; Capt'n Dave Renneker, lead singer; Rama Kolesnikow, bass; Ian Rusnell, keyboards; Jessica Peek, flute and tam- bourine; and Matt Alonzo, drums. Nine members if' you count Meat Dancers Jimi Pyke and Anne Weshinskey. Ten if congo player Chris Hardy shows up. -See Cats, Page 8 scenes, as does his trying to con- vince others about his reincarnation - they think he's a sicko trying to take advantage of an emotionally disturbed Shepherd. On top of all this, he must reject the advances of his new girlfriend, Mary Stuart Masterson, since she is, after all, his daughter. Unfortunately, the movie is weakened by, believe it or not, the unbelievability of the characters' ac- tions. This may seem an absurd criticism of a movie with such an unbelievable premise in the first place. There are comedies, such as Porky's or Naked Gun, where much of the humor lies in the unrealistic actions of the characters, and realism is thrown out the window. In movies like Chances Are, however, the characters' actions must be real- istic within the bounds of the premise and the humor derived from natural reactions to such an unnatu- ral situation. The characters' quick acceptance See Chances, Page 8 MUST SELL!!! One wa train ticket to Chicago from Ann Arbor. Good thru Sat. ex-. cept Fri. Call Micki at 764-2838. NEED A RIDE TO NY/NJ?
