Continued froni Page 1 move on," said Frieder, who enthusiastically supported Schem- bechler for the AD position. Schembechler responded, saying, "I don't think anybody would feel they had to leave because I am the athletic director. If there's a problem between Bill Frieder and Bo Schem- bechler, you'll have to ask Bill Frieder about it. "I don't have a problem with him, except I have, to replace him. I never bothered him much, I stayed out of his way." Schembechler .added that he and Frieder had not spoken in several weeks, except for Schembechler wishing the team luck before their last home game. One of the reasons for Frieder's departure may have been his fall from popularity among Michigan's basketball fans . "Except for winning the national championship, we've done every- thing we can at Michigan.."I was feeling unappreciated. The boos and the stickers can be a very trying experience. "I HATE to leave where I grew up, but there comes a time when you have to move on," Frieder said. Frieder replaces Steve Patterson, who was forced to resign after four 4 consecutive losing seasons. Frieder signed a four-year deal, worth a re- ported $300,000 per year not includ- ing revenue from television and radio shows, basketball camps, and the like. Frieder's wife, Jan, said yesterday she had made an unannounced visit to ASU ten days ago, at which time she looked around at available houses. "You kind of know when these things are going to happen. You have a gut feeling," she said. At Michigan, Frieder became Michigan's second-winningest coach with 191 victories to go with 87 losses. He led the Wolverines to back-to-back Big Ten championshipsP in 1985 and '86, and won twenty As Bill Frieder, on right, departs to become basketball coach at games this year for the sixth Arizona State, the Michigan coaching job is handed over to assistant consecutive season. Steve Fisher. After spending seven years under Frieder, Fisher will guide the Wolverines into the NCAA tournament. * SAINT PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATION ,Ia at -r AVAIABLE IMMEDIATELY.
