Women's Basketball vs. Iowa Tonight, 7:30 Crisler Arena The Michigan Daily SPORTS Men's Basketball vs. Illinois Saturday, 4:00 Crisler Arena Thursday, March 9, 1989 Page 9 Jinxed 'Cats look to break Blue spell M' seeks season-salvaging win BY ADAM SCHRAGER When it comes to the Michigan basketball team, the Northwestern Wildcats are jinxed. Northwestern has lost the last nine meetings between the two teams, 14 of the last 15, and has switched coaches since the last Wildcat win in 1984. In fact, North- western first-year starters Evan Pederson and David Holmes were in eighth grade when Northwestern recorded that 54-52 overtime victory in Evanston. The Wildcats (9-17 overall, 2-14 Big Ten), or Mildcats as they are called by some, will try to break this onus when they host the eighth-. ranked Wolverines (23-6, 11-5) in k Welsh-Ryan Arena tonight. But with prognosticators everywhere lament- ing Northwestern's chances, Mich- igan coach Bill Frieder thinks differently. "We're getting ready for the .Wildcats even though they have struggled," Frieder said. "We've put special emphasis on playing them in our preparation. They have won these kinds of games in Evanston before." Northwestern's two conference victories at home support Frieder's worries. The Wildcats were down 16 points to Ohio State with 9:09 re- maining in the contest before rallying to a 70-69 victory. Minne- sota, which beat the Wolverines this season, also felt the wrath of the Wildcats, 75-67 in front of 6,118 in Evanston. Besides the fact that this is Northwestern's last home game, Michigan will have to guard against looking ahead to Saturday's season- ending contest with Illinois. "First, we need to concentrate on Northwestern," said Glen Rice, whose last career home game is against Illinois. "Northwestern has been playing well at home." The quality at which Michigan has been playing recently has been the talk of basketball experts everywhere. This week's Power Rating, which takes into account victories, losses, and opponents' wins and losses, has the Wolverines ranked at the top of all Division I schools. BY ADAM BENSON The Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team is the evil, merciless ruler of the Big Ten. Dressed in black and gold, the Hawkeyes (24-4) can obliterate a team, as they did on January 6th when they lambasted the Michigan women's team, 82-42, in Iowa City. Hawkeye Guard Jolette Law (averaging 15.8 points a game) is quicker than a light saber, while 6-foot, 3- inch center Shanda Berry leads the team in scoring (17.7) and is big enough to scare away the largest wookie. "(Berry) is the key," VanDeWege said. "She has the speed and agility of a perimeter forward. That makes her extremely tough to guard." Berry has a mutual respect for the Wolverines. "We are expecting a pretty tough game. Usually when we play. at Michigan they give us a pretty good run." Don't forget team star and Detroit native Fran Price, who was seduced by the dark side, abandoning her home state to join the villainous Hawkeyes. Price and the Hawkeyes enter the week tied atop the Big Ten with Ohio State at 14-2. But before Iowa can "They are an extremely explosive team," said Northwestern coach Bill Foster. "They are capable of scoring 10 times in a row. They go to the boards with (Terry) Mills and (Loy) Vaught possibly the best of any team in the nation." While rebounding may have been the focus of Foster, it's Michigan's shooting that is drawing attention. The Wolverines, led by Vaught's Big Ten-leading and No. 2 nationally 71.1 percent, is the country's top field goal shooting team at 58 percent. Missouri set the record with a 57.2 percentage in 1979-80. wrap its claws around another conference crown, it will have to get past Michigan again in the rematch at Crisler Arena this evening. It may not seem like Michigan could give Iowa much of a game, but the Wolverines are motivated by the knowledge that an upset tonight would ease the disappointment of a 10-16 season. "A strong finish is something you can remember your season by," VanDeWege said. "That's the thing you want to remember a season by, not for the bad times. If you can win against someone who is ranked in the top ten in the country, it is extremely meaningful." VanDeWege thinks that to win the game, Michigan will have to find a way to neutralize Iowa's quickness. "It is size versus speed. If they can get into their full court pressing, they are capable of causing problems for us." Berry and company expect Michigan to try and slow them down. "When (Michigan) came here, we just tried to break against them as much as we could. They may try to slow the game, that would cause us to set up an offense and it would break our press."
