Enjoy. National League West Los Angeles Dodgers- They only won the World Series last year, yet everyone seems to be down on them. Surprise. Despite the fact that Orel Hershiser will let up a run this year, the addition of Eddie Murray and Willie Randolph, and the expected recoveries of Fernando Valenzuela and John Tudor will be more than enough to keep the Dodgers on top. San Diego Padres- This is the year of Southern California in the NL West (They need something to make up for the Rose Bowl). The acquisitions of Jack Clark and Bruce Hurst, and the continued steady hit- ting of the NL's Wade Boggs (minus Margo Adams) Tony Gwynn will make it a fun summer in Padre town. Cincinnati Reds- Don't be sur- prised to see Pete Rose fired if the Reds aren't in first by June 1. Who will replace him? The Reds owe Ray Knight another chance at filling Rose's shoes. Houston Astros- Houston has had good pitching since the days they were featured in the now classic "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Train- ing" and this year is no exception. Alas, Houston is plagued by that nagging problem of having no hit- ting. San Francisco Giants- I refuse to believe 40-year-old Rick Reuschel can be the ace of a staff. Will Clark will perform, but the Giants have too many ex-Chicago Cubs on their pitching staff. Atlanta Braves-They are just plain bad. Ex-Detroit Tiger Darrell Evans deserves better. National League East New York Mets- It is scary how good this team is. If Darryl Straw- berry can keep his Mike Tyson imi- tations to himself and rookie Gregg Jefferies plays half as well as he is expected to, make your travel plans to leave the country come October (Does anyone out of the tri-state area like this team?). Chicago Cubs- Hey, hey. Holy cow, no doubt about it, the Cubs are on their way. The Cubs are gonna hit this year, are going to pitch this year, and as long as they keep the ball out of Goose Gossage's hands the Cubs are going to win this year. Wouldn't you love to see them beat out the Mets? St. Louis Cardinals- The Cards have a young pitching staff that is bound to blossom because they al- ways do in St. Louis. They'll have to make a run at it this year though, because inevitably they'll all have arm problems in '90. Pittsburgh Pirates- In the current issue of Sport Magazine, Andy Van Slyke is wearing on of the ugliest sweaters I've ever seen. With that kind of fashion taste, his numbers are bound to fall. Montreal Expos- Pascual Perez had had a relapse and is in drug reha- bilitation again. Tim Raines and Andres Galarraga will be their to supply the hitting, but that won't matter if the Expos can't get anyone out. Philadelphia Phillies- The only reason they aren't the Braves is be- cause they have Mike Schmidt in- stead of Dale Murphy. American League East Detroit Tigers- The Tigers will win because every other team in the division will be distracted by things going on off the field, or is just plain bad. Did you ever see David Letter- man do his Sparky Anderson imita- tion? It's reason alone to pull for the Tigers. Milwaukee Brewers- The Brew Crew just might have won this divi- sion, but Ben Oglivie went down with an injury, and frankly there aren't just enough players on this team any one has heard of outside of Wisconsin. Toronto Blue Jays- They have a neat new stadium and George Bell but, weren't the Blue Jays the pre- mier team in baseball just a year and a half ago. If GM Pat Gillick ever makes a trade the Jays might fly once more. Boston Red Sox- One of John Tower's two favorite teams. Despite Wade Boggs' infidelity he'll hit .350, but the loss of Bruce Hurst will hurt this team more than anything else. New York Yankees- The other team Tower roots for. Ricky Hender- son said that the Yanks were hurt by too much drinking last year, and I'm sure having Billy Martin as a man- ager didn't help either. Baltimore Orioles- There's no way this team could be any worse than last year. They jettisoned their older high-priced veterans and are ready to start anew. Besides there's really no way they could be as bad as they were last year. Is there? Cleveland Indians- What can you say about Cleveland that hasn't al- ready been said? After the Cavaliers season is over, it's going to be a long summer by the shores of Lake Erie. American League West Oakland Athletics- Only divine intervention can keep the Athletics from finishing on top. They have to make sure that Jose Canseco keeps away from behind the wheel, and Dennis Eckersley doesn't read Guillermo Hernandez's biography. Minnesota Twins- Hats off to thee, for our colors true we shall ever be. Kirby Puckett is a machine, but the Twins won't capture the division because they play 81 games on the road. Texas Rangers- They made more deals than Monty Hall at the winter meetings, but Nolan Ryan's no spring chicken. The Rangers will be improved but in .this division that means being five games under .500 instead of 10. Chicago White Sox- The White Sox needed a big trade in the off sea- son, so they got infield scrub Eddie Williams. You figure it out. Harold Baines' knees are better, Ron Kittle's back in town and the Sox are staying in Chicago. Now, only if they could lure Greg Luzinski out of retirement they might make a run. Kansas City Royals- The Royals still owe Dan Quisenberry over 15 million dollars and he isn't even on their team. George Brett is old, Frank White is old, Willie Wilson is old, and the Royals are going no where. California Angels- Jim Abbott could divert some of the attention away from this team's sagging record. Gene Autry tried to lure free agents with big money over the winter, but not even greed could bring players to Anaheim. Seattle Mariners- Just give up- guys.
