Tower admits that he still drinks; but reconfirms pledge

WASHINGTON (AP) - John
Tower yesterday reiterated his
pledge to stop drinking if con-
Oirmed as secretary of defense, but
said he saw no reason to do so
otherwise and accused his detrac-
tors of "hypocrisy."
Tower also grew a distinction
between the past "excessive"
drinking he has admitted to, and
an alcohol abuse problem that
would disqualify him for sensi-
tive military positions.
At any rate, Tower maintained
tat such judgements are made by
a military person's commanding

officer and that, in his case,
President Bush is his command-
ing officer.
Appearing on the CBS-TV
interview program "Face the Na-
tion", Tower also restated his de-
termination not to ask that his
nomination be withdrawn, argu-
ing that Bush did not want him
to and that the controversy over
his selection has escalated beyond
consideration of his own personal
qualifications.
"I still have a sip of wine now
and again," Tower responded

when asked whether he had
stopped drinking since pledging a
week ago to do so if confirmed.
"Once confirmed, I will give it
up altogether."
Asked why he did not stop
drinking immediately as "an act
of good faith." Tower responded:
"Well, why should I?...It is so
little that it doesn't really matter.
One reason I can give it up, an
give it up easily, is because it
doesn't really matter that much."
A few minutes earlier, Tower
had been asked about arguments
by Senate Armed Services Com-

mittee chair Sam Nunn and oth-
ers that he would fail to qualify
for a sensitive military position
because of a history of alcohol
abuse.
"Does this not disqualify
you?" he was asked.
"No.... I would be disqualified
if you could prove alcohol
dependency or chronic alco-
holism. ... In the final analysis,
it is a decision to be made by the
commanding officer that should
be based on hard evidence. In my
particular instance, the president

of the United States is the com-
manding officer
"The fact is I am not alcohol-
dependent," continued Tower.
"There is no conclusive proof to
the effect. As a matter of fact, the
weight of proof seems to indicate
otherwise."
Tower discounted the results
of a poll released yesterday by the
Los Angeles Times, that 44 per-
cent thought the Senate should
reject Tower, 35% thought he
should be confirmed, and 21 per-
cent were unsure.
