After many weeks of frustration, the Michigan women's basketball team has finally shown that it is capable of playing like a contender by beating both Wisconsin, and Northwestern this weekend. Crisler Arena proved to be the sweet home it should be as the Wolverines trounced Wisconsin, 75- 57, Friday night for their second Big Ten victory of the season. Michigan seemed to be in trouble at the end of the first half , even though they were up one, 33-32. Three starters, Carol Szczechowski, Val Hall and Tempie Brown were in foul trouble, with three each. The Wolverines adjusted, how- ever, by starting the second half with Leah Wooldridge and Char Durand in for Szczechowski and Brown. THE TWO combined for 11 points and five rebounds, but they contributed more than shown by their statistics. "Coach told us that we needed a strong start to pull the game away, and we didn't want this team have a chance to get into the game," said Wooldridge. Head coach Bud VanDeWege said: "Those two (Wooldridge and Durand) are a couple of freshmen and they came in and sparked us and they worked so hard." In fact, when Brown and Szczechowski reentered the game with 11 minutes left to go, the Wolverines were up five, 47-42, never to trail again. TANYA POWELL and Szczechowski led the Michigan scoring attack with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Powell, who is Michigan's leading rebounder, added six boards and three steals. Val Hall and Joan Rieger were a presence under the boards as they combined for 14 rebounds and 14 points, allowing Michigan to have an inside game. "When a team hasn't been winning a lot, you have a tendency to let the clock move, (but) they (Michigan) kept attacking," said VanDeWege. The results were the same Sunday, although the manner through which it was done was different, as the Wolverines beat Northwestern, 75-70. Michigan, which was up 39-27 at the half, allowed the Wildcats to get back into the game. Northwestern, by going on two 10-2 runs, was able to cut the Michigan lead to three, 58-55. MOST OF THOSE Wildcat points came as a result of free throws as Michigan fouls were once again a factor. Northwestern shot 21- of-23 from the free throw line in the second half. Trying to contain conference- leading scorer, Carrie Lawless, Michigan's Rieger and Hall fouled her often, resulting in Lawless shooting eight-of-eight from the line and Rieger fouling out. "Its just amazing how hard she (Lawless) is to stop," said VanDeWege. "She's literally unstoppable." With just over one minute to play, Michigan's lead was cut to two, 72-70. The Wildcats, becoming desperate, intentionally fouled Mary Rosowski and she went down hard. Rosowski, still "seeing stars" as she put it, missed the first free throw. ROSOWSKI made the second, however, to put the Wolverines ahead by three and the Wildcats never possessed the ball again. While keeping Lawless to 16 points, four under her season average, Hall scored ten points and added seven rebounds. Brown and Szczechowski had 15 points each while Powell added 11 of her own. Szczechowski, by assisting on seven baskets, raised her season assist total to 100. "I'm so thrilled," said VanDeWege. "They played with poise and they didn't choke." JOSE.JUAREZ/Oaiy' Michigan's Val Hall scraps for the ball during Friday's victory over Wisconsin. Hall had 19 points in the Wolverine's two weekend wins.
