page 10--The Michigan Daily- Thursday, February 16, 1989 BY STEVEN COHEN Last weekend the fifth-ranked Iowa wrestling team defeated Oklahoma State and defending national champion Arizona State to make things confusing again in the college wrestling world. Iowa, winners of nine of the past 11 national titles, may be back on top of the rankings again. Just two weeks ago, Sports Illustrated had it all figured out. SI did a feature on the Cowboy-Sun Devil matchup and proclaimed those two teams the frontrunners for the national championship. ASU, by virtue of its 20-15 victory over the Cowboys, was ranked No.-1. ASU then took its top-ranking into Iowa City Sunday night but were unable to escape with it intact. ASU lost to the Hawkeyes, 20-14. The night before, No.2 Oklahoma State ventured into Carver-Hawkeye Arena only to lose, 26-10. Where does this leave fourth-ranked Michigan? The Wolverines lost to the Cowboys, 21-15, Penn State, 21-14, and defeated Iowa 23-17, at the Great American Duals Classic in January. "I think Iowa should be ranked No.1 and Michigan would have to be ranked very, very close behind Iowa," ASU Coach Bobby Douglas said. "I'm taking into consideration that Iowa was not as strong against Michigan as they were against us." When Michigan defeated Iowa, the Hawkeyes were without 167-pounder John Heffernan, whose success against Michigan's Mike Amine is crucial to Iowa's Big Ten hopes. Heffernan is ranked No.2 while Amine Hawkeyes jumble wrestling picture is No.5. Iowa was also hurt by 142-pounder Eric Pierson's injury default against Larry Gotcher. Though he gave Iowa credit for its victories last weekend, Michigan coach Dale Bahr was hardly daunted by the results. "It just means the race gets tighter," Bahr said. "The Big Tens (March 4 and 5) will be a dogfight." The national championship picture is even muddier. "I think (Iowa's victories) just showed that there are a number of teams, six or seven, that could win the national championship," John Fritz, assistant coach of third-ranked Penn State, said. Iowa assistant coach Mark Johnson concurred. "I don't think that there is one team that will dominate. I see Michigan as being right in there. Having seniors (5) always helps. They have as good a chance as anyone," Johnson said. "We're really excited about our chances," said Iowa assistant coach Mark Johnson. "We still have some concerns, at 142, 50 and 58. But with five redshirt freshmen we really have the makings of a great team." Michigan has faced every team in the top five except Arizona State. Douglas analyzed the matchup. He feels that ASU would be favored at 118,142,150,177, and 190 pounds. He gives the Wolverines the edge at 134,158,167, and heavyweight. 126 pounds is a tossup, he said. Douglas is anxiously anticipating the national championships, March 16-18, in Oklahoma City. "Tell everyone we're looking to ambush the Big Ten and BigEight in Oklahoma." it 7 ~ XMX/v\AAXXXY XKK AxxVx/AXXXXXXXAXYJxA)(.M)WWW PLASMA DONORS $ Earn extra cash $ Earn $20 on your first donation.
