MCC, which included student
government representatives from 13
Michigan public colleges and
universities. Most questions directed
at the Senator concerned student
tuition.
Alaina Lewis, chair of MCC and
a graduate of Eastern Michigan
University, said the she liked the
idea of a tax to help out students.
But she expressed concern about
possible resistance from the beer and
wine industry.
"We haven't thoroughly evaluated
the whole thing - I think it would
be great. But the beer and wine
wholesalers have a lot of power and
it's going to be a long battle."
Lewis said she strongly agreed
with the Senator that universities

can trim their budgets in areas of
management.
"Administrative salaries, at
seventy, eighty, and one hundred
thousand dollars a year, are way too
high. Of course we need people to
run the institution, but the role of a
college is to educate, and that's
where our priorities should be," said
Lewis.
Sederburg said he wants to pass
State Senator. William
Sederburg has a plan to
tax beer and wine to help
lower university tuitions.

He said his goal is to get 250,000
signatures on a petition before the

gents in time for students to partici-
pate in the Honorary Degree Com-
mittee."
But Belcher said he "hand deliv-
ered" MSA's recommendations to
Duderstadt's secretary one week prior
to the official deadline.
"It's hard to say if it was a mis-
take or if it was intentional," Belcher
said. "What is important, because
the mistake was made by the presi-
dent's office and not by MSA, is
that it's the obligation of the presi-
dent to make sure that students are
treated fairly."
According to the president's of-
fice, MSA was instructed to submit

four student recommendations to
Duderstadt's office in time for the
October's regents meeting. Before
submitting the names to the regents,
Duderstadt was to review the rec-
ommendations and select two student
to participate in the Honorary Degree
Committee's fall meeting.
But Belcher said Duderstadt nei-
ther reviewed MSA's candidates nor
submitted their names.
Kennedy said he felt it was un-
fortunate that students were unable
to participate in the honorary degree
selection process, saying every effort
was made to reverse the problem.
But Kennedy, a member of the
committee, said decisions regarding
candidates made without student in-
put are final and not subject to stu-
dent review. He said two students
have since been named to the com-
mittee, but they will only participate
in next year's decision concerning
the honorary degree.

Israeli protestors
threaten to riot

JERUSALEM (AP) - About
40 Jewish settlers protested stonings
and bombings with a sit- in at a
Palestinian mayor's office yesterday,
and five Palestinians were injured in
clashes with soldiers, Israeli and
Arab reports said.
The protest underscored increasing
settler vigilantism that this month
included angry rampages into Arab
towns and stoning of Arab cars.
"Me and my friends decided we
should get the message across to
Qalqilya and the mayor that we have
lost our patience," settler Shlomo
Katan told Israel radio afterrthe group
barged into Mayor Mahmoud Abu
Sneineh's office in the West Bank
city of Qalqilya.

The settlers warned Abu Sneineh
they would riot if he did not stop
Palestinians from stoning and fire-
bombing their cars which pass
through Qalqilya to and from the
West Bank.
Katan, council head in Alfe
Menashe settlement, said the settlers
wanted to talk with Abu Sneineh "in
a good atmosphere." But Israel radio
said soldiers spirited the mayor out
of the office before talks could take
place.
The daily Israeli Haaretz reported
yesterday that children from Kedu-
mim and Karnei Shomron settle-
ments, both near Qalqilya, have i e-
gun stoning Palestinians from their
from their school buses in respon se
to response to the attacks.
