Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, February 6, 1989 Nitzer Ebb Belief Geffen Records There's no getting away from the fact that the overwhelming influence on Nitzer Ebb music is the work of German duo Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft. In fact, Nitzer Ebb wish they were DAF. They have even got a Teutonic name, though they are born and bred Brits! But where DAF were sexy, Nitzer Ebb are sterile; where DAF's Gabi Del- gado made low moans and heavy breathing work in song, Nitzer Ebb's vocalist grunts melodramatically. Belief is basically one messy premature ejaculation from beginning to end. On the listenable "Control Im Here" and "Blood Money," the back- ing tracks would make passable dancefloor emissions, but for the most part on this album, the synthe- sizers go 'plonkety plonk plonk,' lacking texture, depth, and melody. p p However, the group's major faux-pas is their miserable attempt at being' political. Dullards here will probably buy Belief because it's "real Euro, gothic, radical and incredibly socially conscious, (man)." But there's about as much real political insight here as in the banal Tracey Chapman, Guns 'n' Roses, or the crass Mississippi Burning. Nitzer Ebb's musical, nocturnal emissions are as welcome as a wet weekend in Belgium. There are better ways of using your turntable time... -Nabeel Zuberi Emmylou Harris Bluebird Reprise Records The latest release from perennial country star Emmylou Harris, Blue- bird, showcases Emmylou's power- ful, plaintive vocals. Emmylou is perhaps the definitive female country vocalist. Her voice soars, almost breaking, on slow laments like "Lonely Street," and twangs along semi-nasally on the uptempo num- bers like "Heartbreak Hill." Country fans, and fans of Emmylou in par- ticular, love her distinctive singing style. For those who aren't devotees, Emmylou is a prototype of what's wrong with country singers: whiny, nasal, twangy, etc. All those people can leave this review right now. The playing on Bluebird is sparse and uses classic instrumenta- tion, which should please the coun- try traditionalists. Acoustic guitars, pedal steel, dobro, mandolins, and piano are prominently featured, while string sections and other "sweeteners" are kept to a minimum. Bonnie Raitt guests on vocals and slide guitar on the cut "Icy Blue Heart," written by John Hiatt. Emmylou Harris makes no con- cessions to mainstream on Bluebird. She's not trying to cross over; she doesn't need to. Country fans will appreciate this album; Top 40 fans probably won't. -Chuck Skarsaune Reach 40,000 readers after class,. advertise in WAGekend MAGAZNE The Calendar of The University of Michigan The calendar combines meeting, lecture, workshop, and conference announcements with other events happening each weekon campus.
